i am about to search through a jar of Washington quarters and was wondering what I should be looking for in the way of errors & varieties?all of them are clad. i plan to order the CherryPickers Guide vol.2 but I have to go through these and get the ones I dont want back to my brother before then. i was wondering if there is a thread on here or is there a site out there with varieties/errors listed? any help would be appreciated. T J

I don't know much about modern Washingtons. In my mind the 65-98 issues have been overlooked.
The little bit of advice I have is to hold onto any 1983 issues and any nicer 1982P and 1986D issues. Other than that I don't know specifics. I know there's an error with the 2004D Wisconsins

Get a $2 folder or two and start a set. You'll have your own reference collection so you can spot things like type "b" or "d" reverses and '85 sm bust. It rtakes time to learn what's out there but the fastest way is to start a collection and ask lots of questions.
Good luck.

cladking, thanks for the advice.i was planning on ordering a couple of wizard coin supplies "coin collector albums" and build some circulated sets as you advise.
where can I find out more about "b" or "d" reverses? namely what are they?
again, thanks for the help/advice. T J

I'm sure this is some "duh" advice - but hang on to all pre-1965 quarters.

The type "b" are 1968 through 1972 (Denver) that are easiest to spot (PUP) with the distance between the S and the E in STATES. It's greater. The type "d" are 1977 to 1984 where the distance between the right side of the N in UNUM and the eagles head is greater. There are numerous differences but these are the Pick Up Points.

Quote:i plan to order the CherryPickers Guide vol.2 Good decision ... references are invaluable and worth their weight in gold. I also suggest you consider "Strike it Rich with Pocket Change" by Ken Potter and Brian Allen. My 3rd edition lists 38 separate known Washington quarter varieties from 1965 to date ... all clad coins that would be easy to pass over unless you knew to look for them. David
