The number 2 has a different shape to the base of it, unsure if it is a Cud (which it doest seems to be, it's a solid part of the 2) or maybe a different type of die. Has anyone else seen something like this? Kinda cool

From the pics, it looks like a genuine die variation to me!
And I have never seen one like that before.
Then again, I am not an Australian decimal specialist. Nevertheless, I am very interested in what other's opinions may be. Has it been written up in the Australiasian Coin & Banknote Magazine?

dont take my word for it but as I enlarged the pic it looked more and more like PMD, some sort of impact on the bottom bar of the 2 looks to have flattened it at a slight angle to me. but I could be wrong and if murphy is around I will be.

how about a close up of the bottom of the '2'? My first thought was the same as erkle - PMD... but would like to see some hi res close ups! I would like my initial reaction to be proven wrong! would be way cool if you have indeed discovered a variety from '74 that hasn't been spotted before! what are odds? I reckon you should go get a lotto ticket as this must be your lucky day!

I agree with previous posts that I think it's PMD. To me it looks like something has impacted on the 2 and flattened it out. I hope for your sake it is something different.

It bulges out from the back of the 2 end too, instead of a straight tail to it, it seem like a die variation. Open to offers, but I haven't told dad yet

hmmm, could well be a chunk of something in the die, but could also be clever craftsnmanship... I'm on the fence waiting to see what some of the regulars think...

would like to see the other side up close to see if there is any signs of impact damage, and like I say I'm a newb to this, but my mechanical knowledge tells me its been hit. so I'm sorta stuck in the middle, leaning slightly towards PMD.

Any chance of a photo going across the front of the 2 so you can show if it is flat or pressed out of shape?

Wow they were super hard photos to take, I had to hold the 2x2 at an angle to the keyboard camera, and everything works backwards when looking at the computer screen. Hope that they are respectable photos my hand wouldn't keep still. I took pics of both ends, looks solid I didn't see any flat bits. Good that we are covering all options to narrowing down what this is.
