I found this 1979 nickel roll searching and was wondering if it is a real clip. I know it is probably only worth a nickel with all the damage, but was wondering if what appears to be a clip is or PMD. Obverse Reverse

I don't see the Blakeley effect so I would say it's PMD. John1

I lean toward it being real. Look at the way the rim dips into the clip area and the weakness of the devices in the area of the clip. I also think I see a Blakesly effect though it is subtle (appropriate for such a small clip). A microscopic examination of the clipped edge and the metal flow lines in the clip area would settle it.

The devices should be soft on the rim and it appears it is, but the image doesn't show this area close enough for me to say either way. So a close up area of the incomplete planchet area might help?

I have found at least 20 similar nickels from roll searching. I think it is a clipped planchet but it is very minor.

This is definitely a real clip, no doubt about it.
1. The Blakesley effect does not HAVE to be on a coin for it to be a real clip. 2. The Blakesley effect usually does not show on such minor clips. 3. This is a rim clip - less than 5%. Very little premium for these. 4. Faking such a small clip would be counterproductive for the person doing so. 5. As Coop said, the devices near the clip should be weak - they are.

It's a real clip. The fadeout and taper of the design rim as it nears the clip is one good diagnostic that hasn't been mentioned.

I didn't know what the Blakeley effect is so I went googling. The answer seems harder to find than usual! Here it is for those who need to know: The gradual fading of the thickness of the coin towards the clip -- it will not be an abrupt transition. Here's an awesome primer on clips: http://board.conecaonline.org/showt...d.php?t=2600
