Here is a whimsical purchase. It doesn't really fit in my collection, but I liked the look and the price was right.

I'm thinking XF45 with either an old cleaning or light wipe on the obverse. I also like the toning/patina on the coin.

EDIT: After thinking everyone else was undergrading, and going to ha.com and looking at examples, I'll have to agree with the crowd that it's more in the VF-35 range.

Me too sometimes John, don't collect the series, but for some reason, had to have it

Nice pickup. I'm thinking VF30ish.

I'm thinking 35+40, probably on the upper end of that. I'd be proud to call this one my own.

I've always loved the coin, Christian Gobrecht's work was some of my favorite designs out of US coinage. The Seated quarter w/rays is a fantastic one year type coin too. Makes me think just how bland, boring and uninspired todays United States coinage is for the most part.

Great read and a great coin!

VF-30, maybe 35 IMO. Looks original and "crusty" to me and I don't see any evidence of cleaning. I'd call it a bargain at, say, $25. What may I ask was your cost?

Seems to me like there are lines in the obverse left field (say 10:30 to 4:30) as well as the top of the head. Could these just be normal circulation marks?

I'd say VF30 as well.

And to maprince, yes those could just be normal circulation marks. From the photo, it doesn't seem to be cleaned.

Thanks for the comments! I did pay a bit more than your bargain price Jaobler, but still got a great deal compared to VF/XF numis values. I was thinking VF-35 myself, so that's around the average of the opinions here. It is also fully original imo, a few circ hairlines on the obverse but nothing to indicate any prior cleaning.
