I just went through a roll of uncirulated 1970S pennies I got from a freind. He picked then up for me at a coin club auction pretty cheap and knows I collect BU and UNC pennies and nickels.

I set out looking for S/L date coins. I think my eyes will be crossed for a few days now after trying to determine what is small and large on these pennies. Really hard to tell on these and my freind told me good luck as he was looks through 100s and couldn't tell.

But I did come across something that caught my eye pretty quick on 3 coins in the roll. They were right on the end of the roll and all were right beside each other. What is unusual is the S on these 3 pennies are almost touching the 9. All the others I have checked, even from other rolls, the S is pretty centered between the 9 and 7.

I got a pretty good picture of this and would like some input from some of you more experinced error collectors. Let me know what you think about these pennies if their possibly an error or not.

Thanks for any help.

Hi OrDirtDevil

Welcome to the forum !!

The mint marks on these coins were added to the die by hand and there position can vary to some degree, the coin you have pictured looks to be within normal ranges intersting but its not an error.

By the way the coin you posted is a large Date, the 7 is below the tops of the other numbers,, the small date the 7 is level with the tops of the other numbers.

Good to have you here with us ,, Hope you stay around and share more of your coins with us !!

That's a large date, just for info sake...and the mintmark was placed into the die by hand back then, and it was rather common to have mintmarks close to the date. No significant premium.
