I just picked up a few rolls of the (Garfield) Golden Dollars from my Credit Union (surprised that they actually had them) to spend them over the weekend. I placed them on my desk and it was like an instant attraction to them, you know SHINY. I was telling my coworkers about them, and they went over to the CU and "got them some". They went on and on about them asking if they were new, when did they start making them, are they valuable, etc... I went back to the credit union to break a twenty to pay for my coffee dues, and asked if they had any more, just for giggles. And the teller replied that there was a mad rush for them earlier and they had a few left over. I informed her that they were probably form my work center, and there may be a demand for them after-all. On my way back to the office, I noticed several people getting mad at the vending machines for not taking their wrinkled dollar bills. I asked if they needed change for their wrinkled bill and they were happy to receive the Golden dollar, and then they asked for more. Bottom line (for today anyway) is that the public is still not informed about the Golden dollars, and from what little I have encountered within an hours time, they ARE welcomed and successful. I doubt that this is an isolated issue. It's time to spread some more good cheer! Merry Christmas everybody!

Try to spend pres. $s whenever I can. Most times no problems, but occasionally will get questions about whether they are real money. Have always been accepted though. Have been able to get all the presidents so far from area banks. Unfortunately only "P"'s. Have to look elsewhere for the "D"s

Its a shame the series will likely see an early demise. Still, I must agree that the general public is not aware of these coins, thus they are not circulated. I sincerly believe that if banks started making it policy to give them out in place of single bills unless the customer requested otherwise, they would be in regular circulation in less than a year.

I've collected these for my grandkids since they came out. I wish I had collected all the Sakies too.

You know, there is still hope that the giant hoard the government has will be slowly added to circulation as the need arises. Perhaps as more people use these they will be shipped out.

That is too funny. Here in eastern N.C., if the wife hands one to a customer in change at her store they literally throw it down on the counter and demand a "real" dollar. I asked a lady one time why she did not want them. Her reply was that they were to heavy to carry around. I then asked her how many $1 bills she normally carried with her and she said 4 or 5. I then asked how many quarters she normally had in her possession and she laughed a little and replied at least a double hand full. I then told her that those dollars would be much lighter than all the quarters she carried. That is about the same time her smile turned to a snarl and her nose went up in the air and she walked away.

Tim, that's funny. Some folks just don't like to process a logical argument.

"are they valuable" <-- LOL They hold as much value as both parties are willing to accept.

My bank has always had rolls of the latest Presidential dollar (P mint only) soon after they were released. But I keep asking about the Garfield dollar and they never have them. I am worried that I will not get this one, at least not from the bank at face value. And it looks like our government, in their "infinite wisdom" has done the wrong thing again and future issues won't be available at all from banks. Sigh.

Great story! I enjoy spending the dollar coins, it's amazing that so many people are clueless about them. Our work vending machine use them so I usually have a few.

I really wish more Americans would catch on to dollar coins. It would save us a fair bit of $ in the long run.

I was talking with my uncle a few months ago about coins and he mentioned the vending machines at his work kicked out all change in gold dollars. I gave him $20 to get me some and he said he picked out the best condition ones for me. I guess I will have to give him my want list and show him how do differentiate between the P & D issues. On the plus side he mentioned he tipped the bartenders with dollar coins so at least he is inadvertently keeping the hobby alive

I paid with some dollar coins at a Taco Bell and the cashier when crazy, telling me how cool they were. He had never seen one before and exchanged some dollar bills for them.
On the other hand, I paid for a pizza with a roll of half dollars and the cashier had to ask the manager if she could accept them. The manager said no. I said if you don't accept them you can keep the pizza. He grudgingly accepted them "this time only".
