OK, I got a box of nickels and the wife ended up going through them. Of course she started finding War Nickels. So while going back through them we found this: Sooooooooooooooo, a Henning, yes? Or if not, what?

It probably is, but I know a sign of a henning is the loop in the R, and I'm not seeing it. There are reverses without this loop, though, also. Too bad for the unusually deep rolling machine scratches. Happy Holidays

I have looked at this thing with my scope and everything. I am going to consider it a Henning. Woohoo!

I don't see how it can be anything but a 1944 Henning. Congratulations on the great find! The following archived thread had a great discussion about identifying the various date Henning nickels ... http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=53117David

Very nice find! That is a Henning. He claimed to have 6 different reverse dies and not all of them have the Hole in the are of PLURIBUS. My typical find is a mixture of 50-50 with half of mine having the hole and half do not. This one is also a higher grade because it has a full rim on the reverse. Hennings are harder to find with a full rim. I would love to find one of these in circulation. I'm jealous!

A dealer I know advertises in Coin World to buy 1944 no P nickels for $15 each. I let my local coin dealers know I will pay $25 each for them. I sometimes have to pay more depending on the dealer and the condition. I have seen them go for as high as $50 on ebay.

I've seen them go $90 on ebay. I've seen them sell other places for $20. It's tough to say because they are not available very often.

Ok, just wondering. I've seen them for $15 and was wondering if it was a good price.

I would buy a dozen at $15 apiece! I think 25-40 is probably a good standard with good pieces going for more and damaged pieces going for less.

The roll machine marks are annoying. I also don't see any of the usual marks in PLURIBUS and most of his coins do show it. That being said, I'm not aware of any non-Henning coins to be missing the 'P'. Something that strongly speaks for this coin is the fact that the color seems to looks like a copper nickel alloy and not that of a genuine War Nickel. If I had to vote I'll still call it a Henning, but I wouldn't jump to conclusions so fast as the rest of you and I will raise a possible counter-point. Look at the amount of circulation wear on that coin. Henning nickels were struck so poorly (compared to real ones at least) that this coin should look worse than this after so much circulation. Al the lettering here looks essentially perfect. On all of henning's dies some letters seem to look slightly different than the others...like different thicknesses. You've all seen the articles about how the Chinese are basically faking ALL of our coins. I would leave the door open to the fact that this may in fact be a contemporary fake of a Henning nickel. Parts of it just look "too good". I do not believe under any circumstances that it is a genuine 44-P with a Grease Filled Die or something and/or mint error.

Nice find! The Monticello is notoriouly weak on these, something to ponder. Have you weighed it? '44 no "P" Hennings do exist, as pyrob could most likely confirm. I'm still waiting on a copy of Dwight Stucky's "The Counterfeit Nickel of 1944". I've had oppurtunities to purchase several, but a box will give one up. THe following was 1st thought to be a Henning, but later determined to be a strike-through
