Check out this pic:

1901-O-Morgan---Lots-Of-Stuff-On-This-One

Note the

- 2nd olive

- doubling on the middle arrow

- slight doubling on many of the letters in DOLLAR

Of particular interest are the "die clash" marks on the wreath's bow just above the mint mark. Sure looks like lettering from LIBERTY on the obverse.

There's also a bit of doubling on the date

Thoughts?

Merry Christmas, folks.

You should see that on every Morgan you own - it's the designer's initial, and a part of the design.

The known, concrete features we have to go on are the slanted, normal-position date and second olive. The doubling is not known to be a primary feature of a 1901-O VAM; date doubling is usually to the south, under the crossbars of the 1 and the bottom of the round numbers. I didn't see any which mentioned doubling in DOLLAR. These may be Machine Doubling, or just not mentioned in descriptions.

However, the two things we're sure of may be enough, when you compare your coin in-hand to recorded VAM features, to get an attribution.

Where I get hung up on is the doubling of the arrowhead. In NONE of the VAM listings is a doubled arrowhead mentioned. I guess I think that's weird.

Lobby, Just something to think about, doubling always is beyond the spot your seeing, not short of...as the mark is quite shy of the left edge of the arrow point, and does not even reach the tip...My guess is PMD,,,odd it is that its parallel ...other points like the N appears from the photo to be a file line, and the doubling; could be, but can't tell from your photo if its ejection doubling, common and not listed
Keep on pursuing the dream!, even when it stumps you, thats how we learn to achieve greater levels! G

Thanks. I'm of course a rank beginner in this and am making one dumb mistake after another. But I'm sorta stubborn.

Speaking of arrows, note that the top vane of the center arrow appears doubled.

I think the next step is to disregard the arrow stuff, and like SuperDave said, concentrate on the date an 2nd olive.

Let's see where that takes me.

Tomorrow.
