Hi guys

Does anyone know what causes lines like the ones on this 2005 Canadian penny...?

These lines do not touch the date or words, but everything else.

I think it occurs on well struck or first minted coins. Got the same type of lines on my 2 Francs. I could be wrong:

I'm not sure, but I think they are caused during the plating process.

The plating process causes that pebbled surface look when you gaze across the surface of the coin. It's from plating and replating and plating again over the top of a slightly imperfect surface (rolled steel). It's possible to see striations on older coins that are an alloy problem, but that's a different matter.

This is die transference, there are mentions of them here and there in the various forums. Whether accidental from some die cleaning process or intentional as part of the finish (like on silver maples) they come from the die.

WHAM. Lines.

Don't remember ever seeing it on a Canadian penny before.
Just a strange sort of finish isn't it...?
