I do not buy slabbed coins in general, but did buy this one as the coin is nice and in a historical slab.

Obverse of the slab is scuffed some. Will polish at a later date.

Whoa, that holder looks just like an early PCI holder in every respect, except for the HALLMARK logo on the back. I wonder if Hallmark and PCI were one and the same at some point?

I'll bet Condor would know!

In terms of the numerical grade, the pictures are too small and blurry to venture an opinion. At least the color grade is OK; the coin has easily enough red luster to qualify as RB. I've seen cents with similar color in NGC and PCGS holders that were given a full Red designation.

You are closer to correct than you think. PCI bought the supplies after Hallmark went out of business.

Started by Q. David Bowers & Lee Bellisario and sold to PCI.

I wouldn't have any worries about the accuracy of a Hallmark grade.

Thank you, I had forgotten the second founders name.

Hallmark (at least this one, there have been two others) went out of business in early 1991. The supplies, and equipment were sold to a dealer who then resold them to PhotoCertified Coin Institute (PCCI) They debuted at the 100th anniversary ANA Convention in Chicago in August 1991 with the mew shells and dropped a C from their name becoming PCI.

Hallmark was a top tier grading company. Lee Bellisario was one of the founders of PCGS and was ahead of his time (they put PQ on slabs for top tier coins within the grade- that should sound familiar).

I actually had a nice conversation with Lee today while researching for my book.
