It was tough getting the "blob" under the date along the rim - you can see the shine

I agree. The only "blob" of note are those stars. Very poor strike.
Rest in Peace

The die was in very late die state. The devices become mushy at that time. Just a very tired die.

Is that what causes migration of the "In God We Trust" into the rim or is that just rapid wear of the coin in circulation?

I may have misused the term "blob" below the date. There is raised metal there but it is similar to the raised metal seen from the "LIB" counter-clockwise through to the "T" in trust.

The die wear patterns on coin is pretty much the same. The devices near the rim show the first wear in the directions toward the rim. When the die reaches the LDS (Late Die State) then flow lines forms in the fields. In the VLDS (Very Late Die State) you see the devices flowing into the fields that show a loss of detail. Not pretty when you compare them with EDS examples. Also on nickels the the 25% nickel makes the dies wear quicker. Thus the missing devices are more common on nickels.
