I found an older coin and someone told me it was Chinese but I've gone to several Chinese restaurants and they can't seem to identify it either.

Can someone tell me what it is and what the symbols mean?

It's actually Japanese, struck in probbly Showa 30 era (or maybe a bit more because of the hole damage) which makes it around 1965ish. What it commemorates - I can't quite figure that out yet...

It is Japanese but dates from the Meiji era and not from the Showa era.

The hole is obliterating one character in the year.

The number to the right of the hole is "30" and the number to the left of the hole is "8".

I am sure the missing number is "7" so the date is "Meiji 37th to 38th years".

The medal is commemorating the "triumphant return" from the "military campaign" of Meiji 37-38.

Meiji 37-38 would be 1904-1905 which means the military was returning from the Russo-Japanese War.

The inscription on the other side of the medal translates as "triumphant remembrance".
