This is going to cause some complications for me. From the way I take it, there will be 2 different versions of the 2005 coinage. So it would seem I can't use the mint set coins anymore for my State Quarter collection as they would be different from business strikes. I guess I'll have to buy expensive business strike coins on ebay to fill in the holes. I want my quarter collection to be uniform and not have any varieties. What is your take?

Also, does this mean that either the satin finish or business strike coins will be worth more than the other? I think this should have been started at the beginning of the series rather than partway through.

It's entirely possible that these won't be nearly as different as the mint has suggested. Back in '94 or '95 they advertised a big increase in mint set quality but it never materialized. Even if this change is dramatic it doesn't have to be expensive for those who want to complete their sets the same as they have been. You can just get a roll from the bank or trade a roll with someone in another part of the country. The mint doesn't charge so much for the two roll sets so pick and trade with these. Most people will run into at least a few choice unc coins in circulation if they ever use cash.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Anyone remember that series with the wildlife? This was a completely new process and the tokens looked fantastic and collectors snatched them up. The Mint wants to make the best product possible, and a new and better system will be best for everyone.
How many of you have gotten Mint or Proof sets that were just plain lousy? Wash rinse left, poor strikes, weak strikes, not centered well, and other issues?
While an improved system will make the sets look different, it will be for the best. Compare the 2004 set to any from the 1960's. If you cannot spot the difference, well......

I know alot of people like the new sets, and cladkings suggestion seems to be the how of keeping the State Quarter set uniform, and when looked at from a marketing stand point, the mint couldnt have done a better job,When you buy both the Mint set and the quarter rolls !!!

Cladking's post was from last May, before anyone knew what the mint set coins would look like.

Now that the sets have been released and many coins graded by PCGS and NGC, there now is a distinction between "satin finish" and "circulation strike" 2005 coins. So now you need both types to complete you sets!!

As far as grades go, the satin finish coins are very high in quality, with MS-68s commonplace and MS-69s not terribly scarce. Circulation strikes are much tougher, with few higher than MS-66 or MS-67.

The Mint will make untold millions by selling UNC Rolls of State Quarters so that the Millions of new collectors can keep there sets uniform !!

they will also make millions by selling the new mint sets so some high grades can be achieved, which would not have been the case for the Buff Nickels,,

Ive called these sets,, mint set repair kits from the start ,and Ive seen nothing that could change my mind !!

it was all about getting the Buff's up to snuff IMHO ,, Dispicable ? absolutely !! profitable ?absolutely!! they have created a bubble how big ? and how long?

They have also created the lowest production types, with the satin finish, for the Buffalo nickel and the Ocean in View nickels, whether they aimed to or not! Last year only 800,000 mint sets sold (if my numbers are still accurate) and how many of those sets remain intact now. How many 2005 sets have already been torn apart to sell the satin nickels off? I think this years satins will really be worth holding. Future satins, I will have to take a wait and see attitude on that!
