Took the mrs to work this morning and picked her up a treat. As I was waiting for the drinks I looked at the change given and noticed something out of place on 1 of my pennies.

Take a look!

I thought that was all to the coin but had to take pic's of the other side to post and noticed something with it as well. I noticed what I believe to be a large die crack. It's the length of the maple leaf on the right then "T" once it reaches the leaftip.

Nice strike-through error.

Nice Nova

I don't know if it just me, but when I get change in my pocket from buying coffee, etc, I never spent it till I get home and look at it under my USB microscope...It drives me crazy....

At first, I was thinking grease on dies, but now I'm inclined towards a lamination that peeled off.

Wow interesting find! I agree with biggfredd about the lamination peel. I think there might be die grease going on, too!

Looks like a strike-through error to me.

Whatever it is, it is a nice one.

If this is diagnosis by consensus, I'll put my vote in for it being a Strike Through error.

A lamination error leave a different color underneath (steel or zinc). Alternatively, if it was laminated before plating, then the coin would have struck up better.

The top of it does look like it was Struck Through Grease, but a bit lower it's unclear. Anyhow, a great find!

Hi Nova, I used your image and put an arrow on it. I also see a faint trace of nickel there, which would make perfect sense.

The point I'm trying to get to is I think it wasn't grease, I think it was a strike through from a piece of peeled plating off another coin and that it did physical damage to this item. the moderately exact edge across HRH's face was the tip off.

Looks like a piece of the dial plate chipped off and struck through. The die crack is typical on the penny these days, that one is pretty large though.
