Hi guys

Here is the STUPID question I promised.
Why are the denticles on a 1978 nickel just almost dots and on a 1977 they are long as my picture shows...?

It's not stupid.

There's just no defined answer unless you hear it from the horses mouth.

Myself, I have no idea, but I'm going with "there were drunk that day".

I know little of nickels, but I have one of each date and they are the same as yours. I suspect this is normal for whatever reason.

I don't think anyone can top that response Wade, too funny.

One of the nickels to watch for is the '68. Some of them depict what seems to be a transition from beads to denticles on the obverse. Just some trivia...

Big & little denticles. Many pennies & some quarters suffer the same fate.

Not really a stupid question.
I think that it is just a minor change in design.
There is no particular reason for it.

Regardless of the answers received to your question.
Great observation on your part.
Long and short denticals have been around for a long time.
It's just a design thing

staircase..Dose the 1968 nickel start out with beads and end up with denticles or does it look like that because of a misaligned die...?

Gotcha Barrie hence my signature below.

Hi Wert. It's a random thing and is mainly due to wear and/or a slightly misaligned die. Your eyes work better than mine, that USB microscope is getting a good workout!

Now you did it.I have to recheck my nickel hoard now.I always check for denticle/dot differences. But not always for long/short denticles on all dates.
SO MANY "ERRORS" now. Will it ever end?
