The local antique/junk store has an 1840 ( no mintmark ) Seated Liberty half appears VG-8 good rims clear date however none of the letters in LIBERTY are visible. They are asking $30 for this coin. Good deal ?
Rest in Peace

Sounds like a good, which numismedia shows at $31. If it doesn't appear cleaned or have distracting problems, that's a fair price. Try to get it for $25.

Numismedia lists 2 varieties of the 1840 - one w/ the rev of 1839 for $46 in VG8 and one w/ the rev of 1838 for $230. I'm not knowledgable on the 2 different rev varities, but clearly if the one he's offering is the 1838 rev, it's a steal.

Look at the eagles right talon (the one on the viewers left) If the talon is open with the claws almost pointing down at HALF it is the rev of 38. If the talon is closed with the pointing up and almost touching the olive branch it is rev of 39. There are other obvious differences. Another good one is the upper berry on the olive branch. On the rev of 38 it is between two leaf clusters. On the rev of 39 it is between the leaf cluster and the eagles tail. If you hold the coin upright, the rev of 38 has the eagles eye below the space between the ES. On the rev of 39 it is below the left side of the E. You will also see that the arrow feathers extend WAY beyond the olive branch on the rev of 38 while only one feather barely sticks out past it on the rev of 39.

It's actually better than it sounds, these early dates are tougher to find than for example, 1854.

If it's something you would like in your collection it's a good deal. Seems like a fair price and a great design - they just feel good in hand while you imagine where she's been.

sounds like a decent deal, a smokin deal if its a medium letters reverse, easy to differentiate with condor's gracious pics. one thing to add... the '38 reverse (medium letters) is actually an O mint (new orleans) coin not a P mint but bears no mintmark
