I grade it AWESOME! Woodgraining on 81's P and D can be found now and then, it's definately a keeper.

It's probably a 45 but it's so nice as far as hits, spots, etc, I'd call it AU-50.

Back in the day of wheat cents it was caused by imcomplete alloying of the metal in the planchets. However, in the case of these 1981's it is somewhat of a mystery and needs to be investigated. The odd thing is it happens on just one side more often than on both sides in 1981.

My theory is that the rollers used to press-out the planchet sheets became contaminated with foreign metal which was pressed into it. The contaminated areas toned differently from the normal alloy mix which results in the odd appearance.
