or can you tell from this shot?

Is-This-A-Trail-Die?

Note the lower left edge of the "E" and the edge of the shield.Trails run to the southwest.

Can't really see what it is but since it's only on the E and does seem relatively large, I am thinking it might be some imperfections in the planchet or outer copper layer. A pic from directly above, or just a different angle, might help us see it more clearly.

The letters on this area are incuse. A contact mark will show over the device. Rotate the coin and look at the devices of the motto. Then you can see the marks are incuse into the coin. I usually rotate them 90 degrees to see this difference. Straight on and rotated 180 degrees makes it look like something going on, when it is just a contact mark.

Mr.Cooper: There is indeed a very light dink by the "E", I had to play with the lighting and angle but was finally able to see it. The line by the shield though is raised.

Check out http://traildies.com/ and familiarize yourself with trail dies. I have found many and even have a few on their site as discovery pieces. It's a great site.

IF, there was a trail die on an incuse device, it would probably flow over the device that is incuse and not affect the shield area. Things happen differently on incuse devices.

Thanks for the info on the trail dies. I've never heard of them before.

Is that what some are still calling Doubled Dies, even though the dies are created with the single press method?
