The high bidders on this coin and his other quarter eagles all have Id's that say things like "Bidder 2", or "Bidder 3". Why is it saying this? Is ebay having issues or is something wrong here? I was thinking about bidding on this coin, but now I am suspicious.

That's ebay's new policy. In an attempt to make ebay bidders better-protected from contact by outside parties, they've pretty much given shills a free reign.

Their intentions are good. It's being done to stop underbidders from being phished. Which, by the way, is a multi-million dollar "business".

Unfortunately, they're throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

Thanks for the quick reply Dave, but why is it not that way on some other sellers coins, such as this one?

It's only on one's that are over a certain price ($200 I think), because they're the one's that scammers target with phoney second chance offers and such.

Bobby,

Thanks a lot for your help, now I feel better if I decide to bid! It looks like that price is around $200 from doing a quick search.

I have to admit, they're providing enough information about the unnamed bidders to come to some pretty firm conclusions about shilling activity. I can see ways around it, but not easily and not quickly.

The only thing I really don't like about it is not knowing who I'm bidding against. There's a few VAMmers out there who, if I see their name listed as a bidder, I just walk away because I know they're going to bury me.

There is that, also, and there are in fact a couple buyers with whom I have unofficial "agreements." I doubt you and I will ever bump heads, though, as long as you keep your hands off the '21's.

Booyah,

The link below is a dictionary from this site. Scroll down to VAM for the definition. VAMmers are people who collect VAM's. There are several of these people on the forum, hopefully one of them can check in and give you more information, as I am not a VAMmer!!!
