I need some reassurance on a list of key/semi key dates for my type set. I don't really have the budget to pick out "the" key of each series but want this book to be filled with semi-key/better date and some keys of the series. For example I would not be able to pick out a 93-s Morgan for that spot however I could do an 89-cc or a 95-s. Some series are fairly simple to pick a date where others are a bit more ambiguous.

This is why I want some opinions. What are some of the Key/semi key/better dates that have been somewhat overlooked for whatever reason. Also what would be better in the long run.....bite the bullet and get the best date possible in a series or try to pick and choose what I may consider to be overlooked and undervalued. Undervalued is such a bad term as supply and demand dictate value.....so technically nothing is undervalued.....just perhaps overlooked.

Anyway I've rambled on enough.....looking for some good advice from you experienced collectors.

Very little is undervalued/overlooked, and I'd shy away from issues like that simply because they have that status due to lack of demand. You seem to be considering long-term appreciation - an intelligent position - and to concentrate on "overlooked" coins means you're assuming that they will not remain "overlooked" in the long run.

Possibly true, possibly not.

Always, always, always buy the "best" coin you can. If that means you settle for an '89-CC, '95-S or '84-S Morgan instead of a '93-S, do so gladly knowing that demand will never decrease. Play to the known audience, not the potential one. It'll cost you more initially but reward you more greatly down the road.

Thanks SuperDave. I guess what made me nervous was looking at some of the numbers associated with the keys......but then I realized I'm not trying to finish this thing in a year. I guess at this point I'm trying to re-assure myself that the one's I have on my list are the one's to get. Which I believe they are. I've got our areas largest coin show coming up in a month and I gotta get myself armed. Of course every time I go to a show prepared with cash and a list I can never find anything.....then when I have no cash I always find stuff I want......

With economic downturn all key dates are generally undervalued since the market for them has decreased, I would expect the keys to every series to increase in value once the economy returns to pre-recessionary levels

I'm seeing most key and semi-key dates of the 1900s to be soft right now compared to 1-2 years ago. For example, 32-D and 32-S quarters are soft. 31-S Buffalo nickel is soft. 38-D Walking Liberty half is soft. With the prices depressed right now, now is a good time to get those keys and semi-keys with prices down. Scoop them up at a bargain price. I agree, once economy recovers, those key dates will bounce back nicely.
