I picked this one up today at a local coin shop, the dealer called it xf but right away I noticed it looked much better than that. What would this one grade at? MS 62? The hair detail seems to be intact.

I see a couple of scratches, so if ANACS were to slab this they would label it as such for sure. It has lost much of it's luster, but the details seem great. Maybe it is just the lighting?

Probably high XF or AU I would say. Certainly not MS. I only say this because I have an 1851 $1 MS60 slabbed by ANACS.

I don't see any evidence of being in a bezel or fitting. Rim looks nice. Great coin there!

I am thinking it might be an AU-53 depending on luster.

I have a 1849 in my dansco 7070 album and it looks pretty close to the one I have and it was graded AU-55 by ANACS

Bryan, I would say that yours is a higher grade due to the stronger luster. I would call the OPs coin AU-50, it has the detail of a higher grade but not the luster to back it up. I don't think the scratches are significant and guess it would come back problem free.

Detail looks a bit stronger than Bryan's coin which I guess has more to do with strike than wear on the 1849. However, the 1851 shows more friction on Liberty's cheek, the denomination (1), and in the fields. It's a solid AU IMO but should grade lower than the 1849.

I think the 51 is a grade higher, likely two grades higher, than the 49.

An AU grade on the 49 surprises me because of the amount of obv/rev wear and scratches and the rim ding.
