I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on the Trade dollar I am looking to get one for my 7070 and was wondering if you would rather get one of the more common dates in great condition or one of the little bit less common dates in a little bit worse condition. Do you look at this collection as one to get the best condition coins or do you prefer the lowest mintage you can afford. I know in the perfect world I would go for both condition and rarity, but I'm on a budget. I don't want to buy on ebay yet as I am still trying to learn more about these Trade dollars, but going for a coin in really good condition, but not too rare what is a ballpark price range I could expect? Thanks for the help in advance guys/gals!

I think it really comes down to personal preference and your own circumstances. I'm also going through the process of putting together a 7070 and I've decided to go with condition over rarity because my budget is limited which means that I could only get rare dates in poor condition. One thing I would advise is that if your buying Trade dollars off ebay, go certified because there are just too many fakes out there. Trade dollars are commonly faked (along with Seated Liberty dollars) and they can be very difficult to spot. I'm not a fan of TPG's, but unless I'm buying off a dealer I know and trust, I'm going to go certified with my TD's as well as the Seated Liberty dollars and some halves. As for price, you could probably get a certified common date TD in XF40 for around $250. If you wanted say an 1873CC (rarer date), $250 would probably get you a coin with problems (cleaning, scratches, environmental damage etc) or a low grade VG8 Anyway I hope that helps - good luck with getting a TD, I cant wait until I get mine I've wanted one for so long.

From everything I have read I agree and that is what worried me about the Trade dollars from ebay as well it would be a major bummer to get a fake. When you buy certified coins do you leave them in the slab and just leave the hole empty that is my other question about this collection? Thank you for your help it is much appreciated

Mike, Myself and alot of other members will buy certified coins for our 7070 and then crack them out of the TPG holder. Just keep the label in the event that you want to sell the coin. One member on the forum has a 7070 primarily comprised of all slabbed coins that he has cracked out and if I remember correctly has all the labels on the back inside cover of the 7070 album. Maybe that member will see this post and post a link to his album pics. I cannot remember who the member is at this time. As for condition over rarity my 7070 is going for best condition I can afford. I have thought about doing a semi-key/key date 7070 once I finish the 7070 I have already started.

I would get a Trade dollar (still looking for mine) that is a little bit lower in condition than your Morgan, but better than your Seated dollar with Motto. My coins condition slowly gets worse (for lack of a better term) as you go further back in time, meaning that newer coins are in the better condition. I am putting my 7070 together IN slabs, and keeping them that way. A few have "issues"; cleaned, scratched, etc... but nothing too distracting. I will try and take some images of my "work in progress" 7070 trays. There are several Trade dollar threads on the Forum; Chop Marks, TPG, etc... Just do a search with this link; http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/search.asp

When I put together my 7070, I went for condition over rarity. The point of the album for me at least was to collect a representative example of each type coin represented in the album. I wanted the coins to have enough detail present that the major features of the coin were visible. I tried for at least VF condition and stuck to common dates to keep the cost down. It is still a challenging album to complete.

I would go for condition on that coin. When it comes time to sell a dealer is going to be more interested in a high condition coin that will have a lot more potential buyers from other type collectors than from a rarer date only of interest to specialists or people trying to collect Trade dollars by date an mint. Think about it. How many people do you know building 70970 sets, an how many building Trade dollar date and mint sets?

I would use this 1875 s/cc as a down payment on a proof. This was an ebay purchase from a quality seller that noted the cleaning but did not note the variety back in 2005.
