American Numismatic Association
Items from the ANA Money Museum collection

The American Numismatic Association is dedicated to recovering every item from the Money Museum's collection.

Wyatt Yeager pled guilty on Jan. 12 to stealing the following coins between the months of January and March, 2007. Some have been recovered; some were sold through auction companies and their whereabouts are known; some are still missing. It is illegal to own property from a cultural institution, even if it was purchased through a legitimate source.

Click here to read the ANA's news release. A link to the U.S. Department of Justice press release can be found here.

For questions, media inquiries or you have information that may lead to the recovery of these coins, please call 719-482-9841.

This list will be updated as more information becomes available. The following list is divided into two tables -- the first table represents mostly U.S. coins. The second table represents coins that were sold through a German auction house.

Don't look at me, I do not know where they are. I wish I had something as nice as these, but since I am really just getting started again and on a tight budget, I can only dream for awhile.

I would make the guy talk......and find out where the rest of them are.

man some of those coins are incredible and even though I know nothing about the foreign coins (non US coins) if they are as rare as the US coins listed that was a pretty big haul he had going on there and worth a fortune (started to say small fortune but nothing small about some of those coins listed)

Likewise, I don't know much about the non-Australian stuff, but they could have taken the first item alone on that list and made a lot of money.

Can't Kunker provide info on who won those auctions? And if it international does US have any jurisdiction to recover any of those items?

300 coins? That's one a day one of them was sold for $150K at an auction. He is getting only 10 years? Too short if you ask me.

That is an amazing collection to have been lost. It would have been really nice to have seen it. All of those proof and MS coins would be amazing to see.

He must be pretty stupid thinking he would never get caught, since he was the collections manager. They probably interviewed him first!

I could see the same thing happening to the collection in the Smithsonian of American History in DC, since the collection is no longer on display and supposedly in a vault somewhere. That collection is worth many times more than the one at the ANA. They had hundreds of proof and MS gold USA and world coins alone. Along with the 1913 Liberty nickel, $100,000 note, 1849 and 1933 $20 coins, etc.

It is a shame the public can't view that anymore.

This is probably one of the reasons they recently reviewed their security and discovered that over 20 people had unrestricted access to the collection, and that they didn't even know who some of them were! They have since clamped down on the people who have actual access to it.

So do you think that there could be come missing items from the Smithsonian collection too and they either don't want to report it or haven't looked into it yet?

Have you heard of anything missing? I wouldn't be surprised if some gold coins were missing, since they weren't slabbed and there are plenty of existing pieces, so they could easily sell one every so often to not draw attention.

Well they aren't "slabbed" but they are in NGC holders.

Could something be missing? Yes. Have I heard of anything missing? No. If there is something missing and we haven't heard it could be because they don't want to report it, or they may still be doing an inventory. It takes a LONG time to do a physical inventory of over 1.5 million items.

Europe, in particular Germany, has extremely strong privacy laws. Kuenker ( Its most accurately spelt with an "e" to replace the Umlaut.....Says me who has a touch of dyslexia ) The only option would be for Kuenker to contact the buyers and inform them the coins were stolen and request the coins return. As the coins were stolen from the US( ie No Jurisdiction) and sold in good faith in Germany I suspect many buyers might just ignore the request to return the coins( even with the required refunding of the purchase price under German consumer law. I checked my Kuenker purchases against the list and was relieved to see I was not one of the buyers.

To add onto what Aust said Kunker also would not want to just hand that information over as people will lose faith in them that not only did they sell stolen coins, but that their clients have no privacy with them. Same reason banks fight IDing accounts.

As for the second part it would all depend on where the coins ended up. In a friendly country with extradition treaties possibly, but in a lot of countries they couldnt care less.

Very lax oversight of the employee - and how does an Auction House sell such a large amount of quality coins from one source without verifying their provenance?

I am not sure this is a very fair comment.

Kuenker Like Nobles ( I have purchased from both) deals with collectors all the time. They are not like a pawn brokers shop where it is an immediate cash sale. When such Major auction houses sell coins in a floor auction they are recording the name and address of the seller. Further more there can be weeks even months from the time the coins are submitted till the actual day of sale. It was very unusual for the thief to have the courage and patience to wait that long.

The fact that a confirm-able address of the seller is known would make most dealers confident the sale items were legitimate. Also there was no knowledge that such a huge theft had occurred so there were no world wide warnings to look out for coins of that description.

Also the same,IMHO unfair, criticism could be leveled at Nobles...they didn't check the provenance of the ANA coins they sold.
I think if there is any blame to be pointed anywhere( other than at the thief) it is the ANA in particular its procedures( or lack of) that allowed the theft to go undiscovered for enough time for the coins to be sold by Auction
