I have a 1/2 troy pound silver Kennedy coin year 1996 in mint condition from the Morgan Mint. The composition is .999 pure silver, condition Proof and diameter is 3.5 inches. Has a certificate of authenticity & in original closed plastic case inside a blue box. Can anyone tell me what the value of something like this is worth? Thanks for the help.

I bought this from the Morgan Mint in 1996 thinking it was a good investment. I wasn't planning on selling it for a long time but I became unemployed in May 2009. I am 61 years old and my husband is 66 with lots of health issues. Haven't been able to find a job. Gone through savings and 401k so now I need to sell it. This is why I would like to know the value of this. Use to sell on ebay about 8 years ago. Tried to sell things in Nov. & Dec. and didn't do well. ebay has changed since I use to sell. I will also need to know where is a good place to sell this Kennedy half dollar. Any suggestions?

I would like to help you out an give you more then it is worth, as I hate to hear about that situation....

I don't have enough right now, but here in perhaps about a week maybe two I could have it together....

You said half troy pound so 6 oz....

If it is indeed 6 oz., I will figure silver at 30 even (it is a bit less), and that is 180 spot.....

These often do not command much over spot, say 20 being a proof in a store, maybe 40 or 50 on ebay, and that is just a guess....

I would try and give you at least 225 for it to help your situation, even though it is not much an you may get more for it proof an all. Maybe rare, not sure as I have not seen the Kennedy half oz. re-pour in an 6 oz. version yet.....

Maybe someone here could even offer more as it is a PROOF an commands a decent premium and I have not seen the 1996 Kennedy versions yet, and they may be worth more. I am sure wiser member will chime in with more info, and I of course would offer more if that is not right for a proof 6 oz. Kennedy. I can now get silver real close to spot where I work, but I love silver and would like to help you out as well....

Yeah, I too am sorry to hear about your situation.. It is a shame to think that there are thousands of people in your exact situation and it seems to just keep getting worse & worse (even though they say the numbers are "improving").. as for the coin, indeed, you will only get a small premium above spot and unfortunately the price of silver has really gone down since the spike in early '11. It is roughly $29, $30/oz at the moment.. throw it up on ebay, you will probably fetch the most off of there, but, take into account that you will also have to pay the auction fee's & shipping.. you can try craigslis, but you never know who you will be meeting up with.. it could be someone wanting to rob /harm you for all you know.

Good luck with everything, okay? Think positive!
