Hello coin folks,

i was getting some money for a stamp from my pocket when I heard something that didn't sound right so I looked and found the penny in the pics below. I've read of a few instances of copper pennies being coated with a white metal(steel/nickel/etc), but this one is the opposite, it's a white base metal that was coated with some sort of zinc/copper coating. I know it's not steel because I tested it with a magnet and it didn't stick at all, zero effect, nada.

I love a good mystery but this one has me beaten. Any ideas?

Hi and welcome. You have an ordinary cent that has seen alot of wear, which has rubbed off some of the copper plating. Cents have been made of copper plated zinc starting in 1982. You coin has been worn down somehow so that the copper has worn off, and the zinc is showing through. You can do something similar yourself with a recent cent and a piece of sandpaper.
