Folks,
Can you help me with a grade on this. I bought at a show and probably paid too much.

Welcome to Coin Community, rickytd. Although these are very nice images, I'm hesitant to comment about the originality of the surfaces. Assuming the coin is uncleaned, I'll estimate a grade of VF25 and a value of $300+, close to $350 in a PCGS slab.

Nice coin.

I agree. My first impression looks as though it had been cleaned, but definitely VF details

I would think maybe old cleaning that tone back, but what is bothering me is the obverse rim that looks like its been repaired above the 'R' of liberty.

I would grade this one as VF-30 detail.

May I ask how much you pay for it?

I agree, VF30 details, possible old cleaning.

Thanks to all for your replies. I have committed to filling all the holes in my Mercury book that I started with my father in 1963. I was missing all the usual suspects, but now I just have the 16D left. (Like a Lot of folks, I bet)
As far as what I paid, I am in the range SuperDave suggested.

I think I need a better loupe. I have noticed a lot about the coin from the picture that I could not see otherwise.

This is my first attempt at photographing coins. I will say that the photo makes the coin look a little harsh. Would filtered light, and a darker backdrop, improve the appearance? I will have to experiment.

This is my first post on this site, but I have enjoyed reading and learning here in anonymity for some time. Thanks for the advice on this coin

Rick

First...

Great looking coin for this date. I still have a lot to learn about cleaned coins. Can the people suggesting this tell what in the coin indicates it might have been cleaned?

If you're in the range I quoted, you're good. This is a (relatively) undervalued date, a little obscured by the enormity of the 1916-d. Notwithstanding that, 1921 is a key date for anything but the Dollar coin, and to find a good one is a coup. This is a good one, whether the surfaces are original or not. After further study, I think the surfaces are not original - the crud around the branches and fasces on the reverse indicate otherwise - but I have no reservations about $300+ as a viable price for this coin.

It's a key. Don't worry about what you paid today, because the market will catch up for this one. Excellent coin, and excellent investment.
Rest in Peace

, rickytd!

I wouldn't go higher than Fine, because of the obverse rim cut and other minor damage. If you didn't pay full vf price, you did OK.
