Finally started cataloguing my coins!

I have a varied collection (of low value coins) which I have amassed over the previous five years. Now I finally have a list for them and they are nearly all in folders. Makes a change from just having piles of them in a cupboard.

What I discovered is that I have collected some good coins, and a WHOLE heap of crap! My quality standards must have been quite low when I started. I am looking at culling 80% or more of my coins! I am seeing this as a good thing as I must have learned a lot over the years and can now tell the difference. Thanks to everybody on this site.

We are all in the same boat.
I still have mine, But hay we all did it.
What we consider as "crap" is another collectors gem.
I tend to give a lot of my early efforts to people that don't have any of those coins.
It's all win win, you loved them when you got them and you get a real kick out of giving them to someone that will appreciate them.

The first little set I ever put together was a KGV penny set exc the 30 obviously. I put them all into a little pocket album. I dug it out about 2 months ago and was shocked to see the crap I was so excited about finishing. I think it is a good learning step, progressively upgrading coins to better grades and learning what to look for.

Enwarb I had 3 penny albums on the go at one stage.
I now only have 2. I sent the better one to Googoo in a trade with a couple of other albums and I'm sure he will enjoy them.
I still have ice cream containers of pennies and half pennies with all the other pre decimal silver coins.
Most of them are in good nic but common dates.
Every now and then I'll hunt through them and find something interesting so I have no real ambition to part with them.
You can do a lot of things with what you consider now as junk.
My mother in law ( I voted coins instead of her, A different thread) told me she had a 1936 penny that she cherished because it was her birth year.
I hunted through the "junk" and found her a florin, shilling, sixpence, threepence and a half penny to go with her penny and put them in an old bp wallet.
Mate you should have seen the look in her face when I gave them to her.
It made me feel 10 feet tall.
So the moral of the story is " there is no such thing as a junk coin".
Sorry for the rant but I just had to put my 2 cents worth in

I read somewhere (cant remember where for the life of me) about how a coin is not something you own for ever. You are the custodian of it until it finds its way to another person who will value it. I think this has a lot of merit and agree with what you are saying trout. The old saying rings true; one mans junk is another mans treasure.

Tomorrow is the clean out day. When I started to collect coins I was just going for circulation. 1 of each denomination per year. LOL. Then I found out about mint marks, then NCLT, proof, errors, rarities...
My crap consists mainly of 20c coins as that is what I focused on at the start. They are really not worth keeping and I will take them to the bank next week to cover the cost of the next noodle run.

trout : You are not getting them. ;-) Seriously though, I understand. I gave my daughter a coin tonight that I accidently bought 2 off. A square one and she loves it. I will have a heap of state coins to send out if anybody is short of them for instance. (maybe I should list them on here prior to putting them back in the pond)

Enworb : I agree, you don't really own anything in this world. We are just helping to keep the good stuff above the surface of junk that has flooded the planet. The more we can raised the better the future. (I think I just drank my last homebrew for the night!)
