Hey gang, just wondering with the way things are going with computers and plastic, how long real money has left and do you think barter will become bigger again I think barter has never died and never will..a lot like to call it trade now for some reason..it's all the same thing to me It's sort of funny when you think of all the different things that we've used as currency for 1000's of years from just barter to gems, metals, shells, coins, etc. Right down to today were there is that much money that they'd be luck if they could ever print it all..it's doesn't really exist and when the power goes out what then

hyperinflation is always a risk and could see the days of trading return. Would be very interesting.

Quote: just wondering with the way things are going with computers and plastic, how long real money has left I think we are seeing the beginning of the end of cash. With all these credit card awards schemes more people are paying using their plastic cards and now there is that "tap and go" technology being used we don't even need small change anymore. I don't think it will disappear completely in our lifetimes but there will be a reduction in the amount of cash minted/printed. Quote: do you think barter will become bigger again What do you mean Ausjack? Will we go down to the supermarket and present the check out operator with a couple of goats in exchange for our groceries? Or perhaps give the taxi driver a handful of shells and trinkets? While our incomes are all in dollars and cents, money will remain overwhelmingly what runs our economy.

i think soon enough. Have you guys experienced Kaching from Comm. Bank, you can send money to anyone who has a email acc. , facebook acc. etc. As long as you have phone, not even a plastic, you will be able to pay any one at any time. So hurry, saving all notes and coins.....haha

Ausjack I'll trade 3 chickens and a rooster for your whole collection. If you're worried about the downfall of the dollar then get in quick. I know I'm getting the short end of the deal but I don't mind for a forum member.

It is impossible to carry on international trade entirely with bartering, but it probably can be done on a limited scale. Bartering works best at a local level.
Considering the fact that most the components of products of what we now buy come from many locations around the Planet, I shudder to think how World trade could be carried on using bartering alone.
A soundly based money system is a necessity, and there is nowhere enough precious metals in the World to solely support international trade.
Everybody has acquired their PM accumulations by exchanging with fiat money, and their valuations are expressed in fiat money terms.
Often when a country is able to escape from hyperinflation, individual wealth is commonly expressed in Real Estate. That means a lot of people remain poor. Social injustice and upheaval can arise from this.
2012 is considered as the year of 'peak oil'. This point in time has already been arrived at. How does a country like Great Britain, Indonesia or Japan with few natural resources relative to a large population, barter for their oil? This helps to explain why countries with low labor costs can be at an advantage.
I will continue to shudder to think!

I'm investing in shiny new ASE's, Morgans, Maple Leafs, Onzas, and 90%. I figure it will be all worth something if SHTF. But I want to have whatever the baker, farmer, doctor, butcher or smithy prizes so I can get bang for my coin. It's a store of wealth. I invest in an ounce of silver now for the price of two square meals, I expect to always be able to buy those two meals, whether in dollars, euros, pounds, francs, pesos, yuan, baht, rial...

I'm a lousy barterer, I raise about 50 pigs a year and have never sold a single one. I give them away to family and friends. My sister has an olive grove so I always have a constant supply of fantastic fresh olive oil and I don't think She has made a quid out if the olives either. If the Us dollar fails then another currency will fill the void undoubtedly. There is no way the world can run effectively without a unit of exchange be it Dollars,Pounds,Euros.yen whatever. I hope the US pulls it head in and tightens its belt financially and the status quo will remain. I'm not a big fan of the SHTF scenario. Quite frankly I wouldn't survive as a barterer, I'm just useless at it, I need cash to do my buying
