How low does it have to be to start having a premium?

Or one of the wacky S/N; Radar (12344321), Ladder (12345678 and several other combinations), Repeater (12341234), Birth (01211999), Anniversary or other date notes.

This is a low number Note. I guess it has some kind of premium because of the number, but only to those that collect numbers, to me it's just a nice NBN and it fits in my NBN collection very nice. I would just as soon have a very nice high number note as I don't collect notes by serial numbers. Bill Collector

Yeah, I don't understand why some people will pay many times their value, just because of the serial #. It makes no sense to me. They are interesting to collect, but they don't add much of a premium for my taste.

I have only more recently started n banknotes and find interesting serials such as low/high, ladders and especially radars fascinating. Anything in the first or last 500 really does it for me.

I agree wquinn, And I don't understand it either. Same for the star notes, I don't pay any extra for them and will trade them or any "special" numbers off for notes of the same or better condition.
If I only collected "numbers" and "stars" I would have a very, very, small collection, in fact it would only be about five or six notes. Never paid a premium for any of them, not that some didn't ask for a premium but when they did I would ask, if you have something like that for a currency collector I'm interested in buying, but I don't collect currency numbers.
I collect currency and am trying to build my Silver Cert collection or whatever the note may be. If the dealer wants to make the sale he usually comes down out of the "stars" and puts a normal price on it, and of course I buy it. Bill Collector

Collecting fancy sn's can be challenging....same as collecting by year / type etc. I have been working on some fancy sn set numbers and certain "boring" SN's are near impossible to find. YES, low sn's and certain other types of sn's are "easier" to find than 00031000...which is an sn I need for a set. So to summarize...same way folks are collecting notes by type / year etc....other are collecting by fancy sn's that make sense to them.....premium is subjective and will not make sense to those who do not follow it...... pricing can get highly technical depending on who's seeing it / wants it etc.If you think premium's on a fancy SN $1 or $5 are high then check the price on a fancy SN $2....some of those prices are just mind boggling as compared to a $1 fancy sn price. Same goes for stars...I collect "certain" low print run stars which are tough to locate. Once in while I will buy a note IF the design interests me regardless of anything else...mainly foreign...BTW, I also collect notes that has a portrait of QE II on it. It's all about collecting what you like

Hi Ceylon62, I'm a firm believer in that "a person should collect what they like" no matter what it is, if it makes a collector happy they should do it, even if most other collectors think it's wrong or dumb. I guess there is really no wrong way to collect, but there seems to be a "normal way. I think that the "normal" way to collect if there is a normal way, is like the old school coin collectors did it, with those guys they usually did it by year and mint mark. And of course they are always trying to complete their coin albums because they don't look good with "empty" spots in them. Most collectors that I know seem to want to build a complete collection of what ever their collecting, such as a Small Size FRN Denomination collection, most seem to go from the $ 1.00 up to the $ 100.00 and some will also go for the $ 500.00 and the $ 1000.00. When it's complete they may start a Gold Cert, Silver Cert, or a USN collection. Or they may do it all at the same time like I did with my Small size currency collection. I only have a few modern late date notes to complete the collection, none of the late date notes that I need are worth much of anything above face value, but with me it's not a "whats the premium or value" it's about building my currency collection. I guess it's a completion thing with Coins, Currency, and a lot of other collector items. With collecting by serial numbers ( thank God there not on coins ) or stars, there is no way to complete a collection like that and most likely no one will ever have or complete a numbers or stars collection with any normal type of income, and most currency collectors that I've talked to seem to collect in some type of systematic, or again "normal" way. I've found that most dealers don't seem to like or care for collectors that have a system to their collecting, and are very happy with collectors that don't seem to collect in a systematic way, just a helter skelter way, it's very good for their business for a collector NOT to have a system of collecting as they can try an sell them most anything they may have for sale as long as can convince the buyer that it's "interesting". Dealers, please don't take this the wrong way, I buy most of my currency from dealers, and the real ones know I'm telling it the way it is. I got a big kick out of a post by a new collector on another forum that finely realized why a lot of the guys on that forum "helped" him make all the wrong choices with the coins and currency he was buying. Regards Bill Collector

Bill Collector,
It took me a while to sort out what I wanted to collect by way of fancy sn's. For me there has to be some sort of theme / pattern. Some sets I am working on may never get done as it's tough to locate a particular sn. Also, Fancy sn collecting is somewhat newer to currency collecting which in it's self (currency collecting) is still in it's infancy.
The main point of discussions like this is for folks to make up their minds / decide what they want to collect rather than be influenced by reading something then going and buying it thinking they are going to make a profit down the road. Not to offend anyone -- but this seems to be more prevalent on the coin side.

For me the fact that an interesting serial collection will most likely never be complete is what is appealing. I know I cant run out of notes to find and there's always something interesting I hadn't thought about.

brenpicle -- pardon me for deviating from point....As per your original question...here is how it goes SN 1-100 yes there is a premium...then like sn 200, 201, 210, 202, 220, 222, 234 etc until you get to 1000...BUT 301 will not..302, 303 and 304 WILL...305 will NOT etc unless someone wants IT...Also Sn's 1010, 1111, 1122, 1234 etc do go above for a decent premium. Any random number in between can be had for around $2 to $10 premium above face in ChCu. In essence does the number OR numbers make sense?Enworb,I CAN finish of certain sn sets...IF I choose to... One thing is that I do not want to get tooooo much premium tied up into a set. There are 2 folks who know what I am working on. All 3 of us know that no one has completed such sets...also none of us seem to know if the capital into the sets is too much. Here is the crux of the situation...I have sets that CAN be easily completed for $500 or so and on up to $20,000...Ergo I am in a holding pattern until I can justify it. The sn's I need to finish of the sets are EASY to find any day of the week.... but but the other SN's that make up the SET which I have (mainly picked off ebay etc over the years) are tough to locate and normally go for around $20 to $100 unnoticed. Below is something that looks easy but it took me over 2 years to do it and as far as I know no other such END label SET exist.
