Any ideas for the reason for this? I simply can't think of a reason why the 5 would be engraved or stamped into it.

Simply someone having fun with a die punch set. Such things are seen quite often.

Good to know, I'm liking this forum more and more.

I'm assuming this destroys any numismatic value of the coin?

Yeah I think the numismatic value is gone from that coin but the coin's value can still go up in silver content.

This is the whole reason I began coin collecting, my Dad gave me a penny 1972-D from his change back in the mid 70's, it had a "7" stamped on the obverse so as to make Lincoln look like he was smoking a pipe, it was different and unusal, so I tossed it in a box I had with a couple of old LWC and Canadian pennies at the time, really started me looking at coin collecting as a hobby back then, I was probably around 9 or 10 then. Finally at 13 years old, I ordered a 5lb. bag of LWC and some 2x2 mylar flips from an ad in Coinage magazine, joined the local coin club - the rest has been a long fun trip!

Fun coin, ozerman. I'd keep that one just for the fun of it. Good discussion piece and like TheDanMan said, if nothing else you have the Ag value.

westcoin, nice memory. I hope you found a lot of good stuff in that 5# bag. :)
