My wife and I did our first box of nickels tonight ( my second box) and found these. There were six coins in total, five 1959 and one 1958. Are these "Black Beauties"? All six are just gorgeous. I put the 1968s next to them for color comparison. Of all things too, in her SECOND ROLL she finds a 36 Buffalo. Funniest part was that I had just finished explaining to her what coins to put asside and was just describing a Buffalo to her and how we wouldn't likely find one. Just as I finished she leans over and asks me..." what about this one with an Indian on it?" ...I about died! Oh and what is a "Black Beauty" worth?

I'll let someone else determine whether or not those are Black Beauties, but... Do you loan your wife out for roll searching at all? She seems like a great good luck charm!

I would say they are what they refer to as the "Black beauties". I am sure they look more pronounced in hand than you could photograph. Those are the most common years to find them.
1959 and 1959 seem to be the most common but I have found them in 1954 1955 and 1960 at times.

Is there a set of years that black beauties are known to exist in? I come across some dark nickels here and there but am never sure. For instance I have a '78 and a '47 from the last box that are dark, but I just don't know if they're worth keeping. I'll post pics if those are years that have produced BB's.

It's funny I know nothing about black beauties but I look at your pic and just think those nickels are absolutely beautiful, that is what I love about roll searching nickels, the coins are so beautiful to me. Does that make me weird?

@ CelticKnot, why not keep them. it only costs you a nickel to do so

bbradford - I will keep them indeed. Just want to know if I can label the flips "Black Beauty" or not. :)

"it only costs you a nickel to do so..." Ah, the start to any good hoard. ;)
