I remember seeing the invoice from the dealer on this coin with a note from the dealer he did not want carry this type of coin in his inventory (circa 1971) The dealer had the coin enclosed in plastic (we slab them now).

Has this coin been cleaned ?
What grade is this coin ?

Looks to have original cartwheel luster from your pics. I don't see any cleaning. Might go MS without having in hand but at the very least, an AU58 coin.

Hello,

I may not be an expert at grading but I did learn a little bit about this exact same coin some time ago from some more experienced CC members.

Please visit the following URL for the thread ref. my 1883 Hawaiian quarter previously submitted to the CC for opinions.

https://goccf.com/t/97332&SearchTerms=1883,quarter

The obverse and reverse pictures shown in the above thread display either a MS-63 or MS-64.

You you may want to consider placing my digital photos side-by-side with your digital photos for comparison.

I have a good impression of the surfaces too. I see some localized toning, like the crease of an envelope on the rev, which suggest the coin wasn't dipped anytime recently. Looks MS to my eyes too.

The strike is very sharp. The bust side is hard to tell from the pic, maybe 63. The shield side is 64/65. You should really get an opinion from PCGS or NGC, this is a nice coin. Might have been cleaned a long time ago.
