Never know what you might find when roll hunting! Just ask Michael Walsh who used to run Torex (Canada's premier Coin Auction) years ago. Walsh grew up in Moncton, N.B. and when he started collecting coins he used to roll hunt at the Royal Bank branch on Main St., Moncton. One day sometime in the mid-1960's he found a 1921 half dollar in a VF-20 grade, in his search! I'm not saying you will ever be soo fortunate, however, yo know the old saying: "you can't win the lottery if you don't buy a ticket!" Glenn

"I wonder if we should feel somewhat relieved if the bank staff don't know too much about the coins"
i cant say for sure but I would think that bank employees are not allowed to "mine" the cash drawers at all, even if they are exchanging at face value.
i would expect/hope that even basic training would include a 5 second review of "hey, this is what denominations of money we have in Canada" but apparantly they don't cover that...

Actually they are trained to handle things they don't recognize at all. Old bills come to mind, if you try (for example) to deposit a 1937 50 dollar bill with scotch tape barely holding it together, they usually send it in to the Bank of Canada and only when they receive confirmation will they make it a deposit to your account. Every bank is different, this was just an example.
I've personally never had problems depositing rolls of nickel dollars and fifty cent pieces. they just take them and count them. Same with most old banknotes, they lose their nerve with the 37 series for the most part.

The best I can must at my local TD is the odd 50cent coin that they are holding before returning to it to the RCM like Ugly mentioned. Ordering a box sounds would be ideal... Bank employees Can't mine the cash drawer at all - confirmed by a bank employee acquaintance of mine. That is unless they figure a way to not get filmed while doing it. Do notice that the nice numbered notes are more often then not missing from the stack of fresh bills you cash out that is otherwise serialized.

@poboxw That makes sense. I guess people like us cannot have a job at the bank. Either we cannot get in or would get caught and fired pretty soon.
@Ugly It's so sad to see you depositing your old coins/bills. I understand they probably have no collectible value. But it would be far more interesting to show my offspring the real thing than pictures, to teach them history.

well for the last few months I've been hitting a few banks in my area. ALl TD and id say about 3 out of 10 I cant go to because I know for sure that bank employees buy all the old stuff (im guessing they just put it aside and buy it on there time off.) And the other banks just give me a weird look when I ask for it. Although they are starting to get to know me by now :P. in the about 6 months that I've been asking I've acquired about $200 worth of 50 cent and $300 worth of the old nickle dollars. out of that I have found 15 silver 50 cent most were form 50's-60's and only 5-6 dif dates as I mentioned above. And I've found 12 silver dollars including 1936 which I have a pic of here: https://goccf.com/t/100725&whichpage=2so it is very possible you can get something nice yet. And yes Ugly is correct, they will hold the coin for a short time then send it out to the RCM. It differs form bank to bank. I have heard a bank hold this stuff for months while others have said they send it out right away. Keep in mind TD sends coins out on Thursdays so hit them before that and away you go ;P

@Amaths, Don't be sad, I get many coins every year and there's more in storage, I'm not a store and they hold no premium to sell. Photographing each one and sequencing while someone decides if they should give me face value isn't a particularly happy pastime. Even at 3 times face I can't see it being worth it.
I do lots for the hobby, I give away coins, hold contests, make trades and I pass on what little I know, I do enough. There's nothing sad about it.
Life just isn't that bad.

Why is it when Ugly decides to get rid of the coins he no longer wants/needs there are a lot of negative comments made. Returning them to the bank or sending them off to the refinery is his decision. After all they are "His" coins and he can do exactly what he likes with them. I think that there may be a bit of the green eyed monster coming out of some members

If Ugly decides to send coins to the metling pot, I'll assure you they are just silver junk. Even if they are Vick's or Edy's they will be G-3/4's and ready for the scrap pile. After all what's a 1911 half dollar worth in a G-4, you guessed it> SCRAP! Everyone's, looking for the "good stuff'. Anything Ugly's scrapping is just stuff that Collectors don't need or want, or shouldn't really have in their Collection in the first place! Glenn

i really like the idea that ugly puts the coins back into circulation. In fact thats what brought me back into this hobby. I collected WAY back when I was like 12 then stopped. and then like 6-7 months ago my mom brought over a quarter she found in her changed 1961. she knows I was into silver bullion and knew that the quarter was silver. BUt that quarter got me interested in coins again, pulled out my old albums and found this site. I think its a great, he could be getting more ppl into the hobby. :P

All I do is buy a few Tims cards for the girls at the bank and leave my number. Now they call me whenever something interesting comes in Nickel dollars old bills and old coins. Have a roll of 53sf pennies from the bank and this week picked up 40 nickel dollars. Try it trust me :)

When I ask at my local Scotia bank for old dollar coins 50 cent pieces and anything else old I have been told up front that they keep anything that comes in. This is why I have to go to Dauphin MB, to look for coins were the best I'v found is a 1955 NSF penny in around vf20. Which despite it's rough shape was one I needed. The most silver I found in the last year was at a Walmart a near full roll of 1967 dimes.

Ya Scotia Bank sucks on their customer service. Royal Bank is great and your local credit union is always good.
