if I order a 'box' of 50c at the bank what will I get ? (please don't guess, if you have done this before please tell me your experience)
will it be direct from the mint rolls? (ie $500 worth of all the same year) or random mixed rolls?
or a chance for either?
went to 5 branches of the royal over the last week, could only come up with (2) 1992 pieces total between all of them. (2 of the branches I dont think the teller even knew what a 50c piece was)
before I ask them to order in a box i'de like to know what I might get.
thanks wade

Quote: if I order a 'box' of 50c at the bank what will I get ? A strange look. Fifty cents no longer circulate in Canada. Instead any submitted to the bank are returned to the Mint and destroyed. Thus none are available for ordering by the box. The mint sells rolls every year for collectors only on their website.

It's funny that you bring that up Wade. I went into a branch of the TD Bank on Saturday to get some rolls of quarters. I asked the young teller if they had any one or two dollar bills and fifty cent pieces. Her exact reply:
"we just sent a stack of one dollar bills back (didn't mention the year) and we don't have any two dollars bills. We don't have fifty cents as this bank only deals with real money"
I kid you not......I couldn't imagine what would have come out of her mouth had I asked for a box.

Wade these are easy enough to get, get your fifty quality posts and I'll send you enough to get you started for the price of sending me an email (free in other words). Between myself and the other collectors we likely have enough "just regular coins" to fill you up.

Hey Ugly the original poster has a point. At the Royal bank I was told that they would be able to order 50 cent coins in for me. all I needed to do was ask and wait. I never did it because I knew I wouldn't find anything 67 or earlier and I have most 68- present in very good quality. So ordering wasn't the best plan. That being said I'm kind of curious as well what they would have sent me?

I feel your pain wade. I have been trying to get my hands on Fifty Cent coins (68 - current) and Pre Loonie Nickel Dollar coins from my banks for the past 2 years. I have found a few at here and there but it seems people in Sault Ste Marie do not turn them in all to often. I just can not get myself to pay the premium via ebay and the only coin dealer in my area is a pawn shop (basically if it is not silver or gold they could care less and rarely have them for resale). So I wait for my chance to hit the jackpot on the halves and dollar coins. The one time I did hit a nice load...they were all for only 3 different dates and not in decent shape at all. Ahh well. I guess we can dream about boxes of halves. :)

Oh and Wade, along with Ugly's generous offer the best thing to do is be patient and ask EVERY time you go to the bank if someone has brought them in. So far thats the only way I have been able to get them myself. and like I said above I have been lucky in the fact I was able to get most of the 68- present and VERY lucky to find about 15 pre 67 (only 5-6 dif dates>) And yes you will get weird looks and questions but it pays off in the end..
WAIT do you live in Vancouver? IF so asking the banks is a BAD idea.. :P I live here and want those coins to. hehe j/k ask away. and have fun.

Honestly getting half dollars from the bank never occured to me, maybe I'll give it a try and see what happens. Should be an interesting experience at least.
@Wade That was funny, good for a LOL.

I wonder if we should feel somewhat relieved if the bank staff don't know too much about the coins. Otherwise I'm afraid they will get their hands on them when they see interesting ones and there will be less or no chance for us.

I can't believe that Canada hasn't got a circulating 50 cents and still use 1 cent coins. Weird The Canadian 50 cent is a great design it's a shame. But then again ours are worth keeping in circulation

@Trout1105 As the detail in the 50 cent piece is well done the imagery is distasteful. The unicorn represents Canada being bound by the monarchy through the representation of the Crown around its neck and the whole chain wrapping around the unicorn.
Australia has a great design for its 50 cent piece, not to mention all the other circulation coins. The Echidna looks great in silver proof, the top spines really show a 3D effect and picks up the light miraculously.

Good point roger, I never really noticed the chain before. I just thought is was a Cool coat of arms. At least you don't shoot them , we shoot or run over the animals on our coat of arms quite regularly.
