OK, this was not a gamble because of the seller. This is one of the sellers I have bought from before and is awesome. I highly recommend thi guy. The gamble is can I do the conservation or not. I am thinking a good acetone bath will hel a lot. I was willing to gamble up to 50, and came in under that. I will take pics once I get it in hand and see what happens. http://www.ebay.com/itm/27089025366....m1439.l2649

Although I've never purchased from this seller I have always felt their descriptions were somewhat misleading. They don't specifically offer grades; instead they say in this case "some may say VF while others say VF+". They therefore imply it's in the VF range when clearly it is more like F-12. They also call it original and don't mention any defect. If it's original and defect-free why do you think it can be improved with acetone?
That said, I think you paid a fair price for a F-12. Hopefully it will turn out to be nice in-hand and maybe won't require any treatments.

I do wish you well with it, but I totally agree with Jaobler regarding the seller. If you pay $85-90 you can get a decent VF without having to worry about what will happen once you take it out of its mylar shipping flip and void your return privilege. That coin looks as if it has already been worked on. The fields around the PVC or tape damage areas look brushed. I believe at least two solvents were already applied to the coin to try to loosen and remove the residue and that the operation had to be called a failure because the damage was too deep and/or to difficult to remove. Good luck.

I do agree that the coin is a gamble and would be interested to see if you have success. Regarding the seller - I've bought several coins from him and have no complaints. He's smart not to assign a grade because that's where the disagreements begin. Most sellers that do assign a grade on ebay tend to overgrade anyway. I prefer his approach - he shows you very clear pictures and lets you decide.

I agree with you on this seller. I have purchased from him for over 8 years and have never had a bad experience. Good luck with your gamble experiment.

I like your chances with the acetone. However, there's a worry about a successful conservation exposing surfaces which haven't aged the same way as the rest of the coin; you may end up with bright spots under what the acetone removes. With that said, good on ya. That's the kind of thing that I could see myself doing.

Looks like green gummy residue, should be easy to remove.

I've bought from vette and have no complaints either, he certainly sells a lot of coins. I think that stain/residue will come off with acetone, but it's not 100%. I've taken many similar risks, and have been OK on most of them. My best one was a 13-s lincoln, sold as AG and the glue came off in a second, now a nice VF-EF problem free coin

Either my high def monitor isn't high def, or I am a lot more blind than my eye doctor thinks, or you have a monitor that goes to molecular level, but I have no clue how you can determine what solvents and how many were used or not used on this coin. It seems to me simply that vette did not feel like cleaning and just sold it as is.
Not sure how NOT giving a specific grade would be misleading. There are crystal clear pics of the coin. With the zoom feature no less. And have been on everything I bought from him. Actually showing the exact coin with clear pics is exactly the OPPOSITE of deceptive.
Regardless, it shipped today so we shall see soon enough.
