I was wondering if anyone knows anything about "safe" humidity levels for coin storage. In my floor safe I use dessicant, but for general storage, what might be a safe level of humidity? I ask because given the winter months, I have a humidifier an can control my home's humidity levels. Any opinions? I have not noticed any damage, but am just curious.

You shouldn't worry if your coins are packed well in a plastic container with a bag of silica gel in it. However if you do know your room is very humid, perhaps you should get another larger container or a smaller container to repack the coins into less humid enviroment.

Using silica gel packs can also help significantly.

What about gold sovereigns? After reading the story of the Douro it seems they like to be stored at the bottom of the ocean in salt water!?

I don't know but it seems like salt water wouyld be a horrible idea because for long term storage the salt would act like a sand blaster and eat away at the coins metal. I may be 100% wrong in this thinking but it just seems to make sence to me anyhow

I know, it doesn't make sense to me either but here's the story. http://allgoldcoins.co.uk/allgold/i...ro_story.htm

I have read that gold is impervious to attack from many substances but I thought the ocean currents, as you say, would wear at them.

The couple of 130+ year old gold sovereigns that I have do seem to still look great. And they don't tone like silver or copper. It's one of the reasons I've turned to them after getting disgruntled with the whole toning business of other coins.
