If you had to give up all your coins except one, which would you keep and why? Is it just the value of the coin or maybe the history behind it? Mine would be my 1899 Liberty nickel. This coin is definitely not the most valuable coin in my collection, but it is my favorite. I found this coin when I was roll searching. I opened a box of nickels that I just picked up from the bank and my heart skipped a beat when I saw a big silver V looking up at me from the top of a roll. It was a great feeling. I love this coin because its just simply my favorite find. And to think that this coin that is over 110 years old was still in circulation is just plain cool. So lets hear it. What coin would you keep, and whats the story behind it?

I'm sure this will be a common response...a coin left to me by my grandfather. It's an XF 1807 Capped Bust half dollar. It does have some vaue to it, but this is probably the reason I collect coins today. I knew practically nothing when I inherited his collection, and this coin just stood out from everything else. My only regret is not knowing which one was his favorite.

Thats really cool akane17. Thanks for the story. My Grandfather has a small collection that I know of, but I have not seen any of his coins in about 10 years. He told me a long time ago that he would pass down some of hsi coins to me one day. Thanks to you I'll make sure to ask which of the coins is his favorite. That would be really cool information to know.

I would keep the 2004 ASE I bought when my daughter was born. Only paid $7.00 for as well.

My 1917 Type I Standing Liberty ANACS MS-63 FH. Sure, it's real common, but this is when I started getting SERIOUS about my 7070.

I gotta say, its really cool to hear that peoples favorite coins are coins that where handed down to them by their Fathers or Grandfathers. Makes me really look forward to when my son is old enough to get into collecting and I can hand down some of my coins to him.

Mine is an 1822 Large Cent that my grandmother turned up in her garden in upstate NY back in the early sixties I think. See gave it to me in the early seventies when she found out I collected coins. Here is the cool part, it is not a copper planchet. It looks like it may have been an early re-strike from expired dies.

The most sentimental coins I have are all common date morgans given to me by my great grandmother and my grandfather (her son) and what started the obsession.

Mine would be a dekadrachm of Athens, of 480 BC, which was stuck the commemorate victory over the Persians (Iranians), in the Battle of Marathon (land battle), and the Battle of Salamis (sea battle), when the Athenians with some allies, which included the Spartans, finally threw the Persians out of Greece, never to return.
The Hunt Brothers purchased the Seltman example of this coin, for $10 million.
I have a copy of Seltman's book on Greek coins, and this coin is illustrated in it.
This coin is one of the most historically significant and valuable coins in the whole of numismatics.

Moved this to the main coin forum. Not many will probably fit in the Modern section, plus, this will certainly give more visibility to our international members. Great topic by the way.
