Does anyone know when the new design is coming out? I tried to research it but was unsuccessful.

I have just researched the US Mint website and can not find any information on the the release date for the 2012 Native American $1 coin yet. I have not seen it published in Coin World either.

As I understand it, the 2012 Native American (Sacawagea)will not be released for circulation but will be available only through the US Mint in rolls at $32.95 or $34.95 per roll I can't remember which. I understand that the 2012 Presidential $1 coins will be the same way.

Yes, they are; however, they are now changing the reverse each year with a different native american theme, so each year is different. The different reverse makes it easier to tell the year of the coin without having to roll the edge to find it. Still have to roll the edge to find the mint mark which is a bit of a hassle.

I was just thinking of this Native American dollar design when I was picking up my weekly Dollar Roll from the Credit Union...this week produced a John Tyler roll.

I did not hear that the Native Dollar was going "back" to N.I.F.C. status.
Strange though, since they just pulled it "out" of N.I.F.C. status for circulation only just, what, two years ago ? .....

Regardless, I'm looking forward to this years design, and can't wait to have it in Proof and MS for the albums ! .....

The mintage requirements of the Native American dollar are tied to the total annual mintage of the Presidential dollars. Since the Presidential dollar is supposed to be going NIFC, it follows that the NA dollar should be NIFC as well.
