I found this coin, along with several others, in a jewelry box that belonged to my wife's Grandmother before she passed. I can't tell if it is real or not, but I can't find any markings on it to say that its not. The coloring does seem to be a bit off though. If it is real, I don't know if it would be considered an error coin because of the extension on the side or not. Any ideas from y'all would be great.

Hello,

What does this coin weigh?

Does it stick to a magnet?

Besides the discoloration and the extended piece what else makes you think that it is not authentic?

It looks like cast lead to me. Someone made a plaster mold; heated some sinkers up; and poured it. The "bump" on the top is where the metal was poured into the mold and the excess ended up solidifying in the "channel" (technically called a "gate") through which the molten lead was poured.

With practice and experimentation the lead cast coin would not be hard to make. As a kid I used to play around with melting lead and pouring it into molds all the time. I once did it with a Kennedy half - but melted it later to make something else.

Agree ... looks cast. Balance it on the tip of your finger, hold it near to your ear and gently strike the edge with another coin. Silver will have a slightly sustained, high-pitched ring. Pot metal or lead, as this item appears, will have a dull sound. Many cast counterfeit coins were struck in the early 1900's when a quarter would buy a meal. Half and quarter dollars seem to be the most often copied.
