What I really want to know is just what it looks like happened to this coin, more than the grade. Does this look like someone tried to polish out that long scratch?

I'm guessing the brushing is incidental. It's a shame - that looks more like a planchet flaw than damage.

I couldn't figure out what I was seeing but it didn't make sense as a scratch, incised yes, but irregular and not even always present on the highest spots, like around the date.

Looks like a die break near the date. However, the coin looks to have been harshly cleaned. Unfortunately, it might only be worth bullion unless it's an incredibly scarce VAM.
