One thing I really like about this website is the friendly, open, respectful attitude of the members across the spectrum of experience. It seems that one of the things that can happen to collectors over time is a deep distrust and cynicism. I have encountered this mindset at coin clubs I have belonged to in the past and it discourages others from joining our hobby. I recently read the topic on CCU about the guy who inherited a collection from his Grandfather. Some of the insulting and cynical replies were shocking to me. Reading through some of their other topics I found more of this attitude on this website. To me that is a good way to drive a stake into the heart of numasmatics. If any optional activity, like coin collecting, is turning you into a curmudgeon, than by all means give it up and try something that makes you a nicer person. How about bungy jumping! Colin

I would state my opinion of that place, but this is a family-friendly forum.

it is easy to let the forum go to pot like it has over there (not saying I do not go there from time to time) with everyone complaining about this and that instead of trying to help. It seems the people that are actually looking for a little help get pushed away with clinical remarks accusing them of this or that. We work hard to keep this a place that if you need help all you have to do is ask and if you have something negative to say that isn't helpful just keep it to your self, the truth always has a way of coming to light even without accusing each and everyone that you think may be up to no good. This place is smaller than it is over there and each time wqe grow we add more mods to help keep this a family friendly place to visit and call home and I hope it stays the way it is now because its hard to find a helpful topic when you have to wade through all the riff raff topics when you grow so big that a handfull of mods cant keep up with

Okie, I read the thread and your posts. I really think you overreacted to what was clearly, to me, a joke. The thread is there for everyone to see for themselves. I strongly agree with you that there is an element over there that thrives on argument for argument's sake. It gets silly and ridiculous. There is also no other board with the same volume of information and knowledge available on demand, except perhaps the NGC boards. If you need solid information on a coin topic, you can usually get it ASAP. It is an invaluable resource. It is to anyone's detriment not to take information where they can get it.

Bitters, I probably did over react, but is it common practice to ask someone if they "polish" their coins by taking something they said out of context? It was my first post and I had told the story of my Mother's inheritance by way of introduction. If it was a joke it was done in a way to put me down or put me in my place. I sense a kind of in-group, we're better than all the other idiot collectors out there kind of an air. (We okies are sensitive to that kind of thing.) That attitude is prevalent over there and not here. My intent wasn't to bring attention to my own experience on CCU, but just to express appreciation for this site and make an observation. I can surely lurk around there and get all the info I want withour posting and being held up to ridicule again, thin skin and all. Thanks for your opinion.

I am not familiar with nor interested in CCU. But I am rather concerned about your statement insinuating that the CCU attitude is creeping in over here (if I understood correctly).
This is far and away the most civil on-line community in which I have participated. That is not to say that our regulars never have a bad day. Jabs aren't always accepted in good humor, but flame wars seem completely absent.
I do have to admit that I have noticed a disturbing trend. A new user registers and asks a question about a found coin, new purchase, or an inheritance. Some member spends a considerable amount of time looking at references and composes for the neophyte a thoughtful answer. Now usually, the new poster is gracious and appreciative. But other times the person doesn't ever respond. No thanks, no indication that he even received the information. Maybe it wasn't sugar-coated enough, or maybe he just doesn't like the answer. Anyway, then another newbie comes 'round. It's not always easy to wipe the slate clean and be as generous and gracious as one would like.

I definitely was NOT saying that it was creeping in here. I have never experienced anything but courtesy and mutual respect on the Coin Community Forum. Please read my remarks over again - I was discussing another forum as an example of why I appreciate this one! Peace.

You'll never see a flamewar here, either. We have automatic Halon systems in each forum, and we're not afraid to push the button. This is a G-rated forum, and it will remain that way. Helping a newbie with a question isn't for everyone, nor is it a prerequisite of membership here. It can be time-consuming, especially when, like me, you're taking advantage of research skills rather than pure knowledge to answer some questions. Heck, I've been working on one 1878-S attribution for a week now. And, like you said, texasmick, sometimes the return on your investment isn't quite what it should be. The way I view it, I am pushing the limits of my own knowledge in order to help out, which improves me in the long run. That helps to make up for the occasional attitude of entitlement.

I apologize for misinterpreting your sentiment. What I had keyed in on was: Reading through some of their other topics I found more of this attitude on this website.I thought you were saying it was creeping in on this website, but you were still talking about that one. I'm really not trying to give you a hard time. I honestly thought you were sounding the alarm. Once again, sorry.

Here are my thoughts on the subject.
there are alot of knowledgeable coin dealers and collectors there with a tremendous amount of knowledge.
3) I have made several purchases with members and were very pleased. I bought my 65 Walkers there a gold piece and have bid on Jeremeys auctions for the last 3 years.
4) a few times I wanted to make purchaes I asked for opinions and had some very informed folks help me avoid huge mistakes.
5) of course sometimes folks disagree as in with Legends threads but It never escalates into anything but a disagreement and that should be ok. While there are negative folks there. Also there are a group of very helpful, loyal and friendly folks.
6) there is the Metal detecting forum thet has also helped me with that side hobby.
And as a side note the same has occured for me on your site as well. I have experienced good things from both sites (here and CU) and it has helped me in all aspects of this hobby.

I have been apart of both sites, I am way more involved here then at CC. But like some have said they have a handful of members that are very alo tof knowleadge much like here. bit yes there are a few that spoil it for other. I don't post as much my opion there since I don't want them to get shot down. I am a little more selective on what I say. But here I feel a little more compterble to post here since I knwo my opion is just that my opion and will not be put down. The one good thing is there are some very guenorus people and they do alot of giveaways there which are alway fun and that is were I won my first giveway people are very good here at giveawyas but there are more there. So think both are good depending on you are looking for.

I just wanted to chime in and say I agree this place is really chill and friendly.....alot like TreasureNet for MDing...real laid back over there too. CU has some real interesting threads and smart folks.....alot of junk too....but that comes along with a heavily traffic'd forum. Greetings Okie! Hope you like it here!

I have been pondering why I was so touchy about Coin Collectors Universe and I think it has something to do with being completely shutup in my house for five days by an ice storm. My long and steep driveway is covered in a two inch coating of the hardest ice you have ever seen and all the roads out of my neighborhood are impassable. My coin collection is in a safety deposit box and I can't even play with that. The cupboards are bare, my wife has beat me for the eightyth time in Scrabble and I am really getting fairly unsociable!

Texasmick, I agree that it can be frustrating when a new member posts a question and, after taking the time to research it, they never return. You don't know if you helped them or not. However, I believe it is always worth taking the time to respond if you can because that Q & A will also help other members and even the guests who frequent the forum. As far as CU goes, I'm also a member over there. I don't post much but it is a good resource. They have an incredible knowledge base over there. In my experience, it is definitely not the place for the new or young collector. They don't have a lot of patience with the basic questions that every new collector has. As I understand it, the forums over there are being revamped and I think it may get a lot better. I haven't been over there for a while, but we need to remember that each forum and site has it's niche in our hobby. You can never have too many resources for education.
