Have you ever wondered how the Stack's / Bowers auction catalogs are created?

They have very nice catalogs; I wish I was their photographer. As one who used to manage a lot of product catalogs, theirs are very well-executed and expensive full-color productions--despite their short market life. A lot of production costs there, including printing...perhaps $10 unit total. Consider how much pdfs have reduced the printing and distribution costs--less expensive printing and mailings. The Digital Age has changed things immensely--but put many printers out of business.

I used to deal with a printer in Long Island City that do Sotheby Catalogs and the likes, I know that the camera guy was shooting some very expensive stamps and covers, they have two personnel from Sotheby keep watch of the inventory and handle all items.

Its was art for the trades and kept workers busy at all time in order to get the catalogs out, now it boil down to a few person doing all the works.

Being the photographer of record for things like that has pretty much become my life's dream.

I've seen photos here that rival and often exceed what is published by the auction houses.

Given that they're surely using pro-level equipment, there's no doubt in my mind that I and many others here - including yourself - could duplicate their best efforts with the same gear. It's really not a "talent" thing, but rather just another skill which can be developed in time by almost anyone with the proper tools.

As long as the photographer knows what a good photograph looks like, and what is possible with their tools, they will find a way to do it. I'm sure I could do better with more professional tools--especially regarding lighting.
