While coin roll hunting, I came across a 1969 Memorial cent counter-stamped with "July 1969" and a mini lunar lander. I've looked this up and gotten the idea that while this is rare, it adds absolutely no value to the coin. With that in mind, does anyone have any idea how many were done like this? In Canada, we had this jeweller on the west coast, who bought a whole bunch (in the thousands apparantly) of Canadian silver dollars and counterstamped his (or his store's) initials onto the silver dollars. In the Charlton's guide, which is the reference book for Canadian currency, it is considered a variety and increases the value of the silver dollar. Any info from anyone would be appreciated. Secoined

What's the name? I'll see if it's mentioned in one of my books. The 2 combined have about 25,000 listed. As far as the cent, not rare, a novelty. Just google it.

I have the Apollo 13 one. I would love to have the others. I don't think it's quite right to say that it doesn't add value to the coin. I'd certainly like to buy some, and I'd pay more than for a regular Memorial cent in the same condition.

Me too but when they pop up on ebay they are always too expensive. Usually they list for over $6 each.

Why is EVERYTHING on ebay just a hair too expensive (well, when it's not overpriced by a factor of 10)? I thought about collecting the set of these, but $6 apiece is just a bit too much. I've also been trying to collect some of those irradiated Mercury dimes but they consistently go for at least a couple bucks over what I am happy to pay.

Very cool that thirteen missions were done....I had no idea. I'm trying to find the one that I found to take a pic and post it. If the poster who wanted more doesn't have the one I have, you're more than welcome to it PM me with your address and I'll send it to you with my compliments.

There were 17 Apollo missions (sorta) but the numbering actually started at 4. The first three launch vehicle tests were "Apollo 1, 2 and 3" but weren't originally called that. The launchpad fire that killed three astronauts was only later called Apollo 1. Apollo 4-6 were also unmanned tests, and 7-10 were manned tests that got progressively closer to landing. Apollo 11 was the first actual moon landing, 12 and 14-17 were also successful moon visits. Apollo 13 was the aborted mission with the Tom Hanks movie (hence the counterstamp commemorating the successful splash-down instead of a moonwalk.) So there were 6 successful landings - I think there are probably only counterstamps for 11-17. I've never seen one for the Mercury and Gemini programs, which were the manned programs that preceded Apollo. There were plans for Apollo 18-20, but apparently America got bored of being awesome. The parts for Apollo 18 got turned into Skylab, a They Might Be Giants album and a recent sci-fi/horror movie. Apollo 19 and 20 turned into museum pieces.
