Way, way too long ago. The one thing I remember about when I started coin collecting was that the Mercury dime was the only Dime in existence except Liberty Head Dimes and even Sitting Liberty Dimes in change were common. Every one used Silver Dollars and I blew so many at amusement parks, it makes me sick now but back then, they were as common as Standing Liberty quarters. Walking Liberty half dollars too were what was the common Half but many of the Liberty Heads were still in use. Back then to acquire a full set of Lincoln Cents was really easy since so few people actually collected coins. Imagine people still trying to use Large Cents but many did. I remember putting so many really great coins back in circulation since I already had a few of them. My favorite coin story was when I passed a coin store and saw 10 1916D Mercury dimes in the window in a dish. $1.50 each I think. Not sure where I ever got that much money back then but I bought them all. Can't remember if I got a discount for buying them all either. This was somewhere in the 40's so not so big a deal since so few people collected coins back then.

For me a little over 5 years, when I started collecting US coins. But now I primarily collect ancient Roman, with some Byzantine on the side.

It was 1957 for me. The Whitman folder Lincoln Cents #2. A lot of coins have come and gone since then.

I started around the age of 5. As a child I bought a lot of foreign coins, tokens, and a fair amount of US coins. I don't remember what I first bought but I still have just about everything that I've bought (minus most non-silver foreign coins)

Great subject...I like reading everyone's answers. In fact, this topic inspired me to join the group and post my first message. Doesn't seem that long ago, but I have 10 years in the hobby. Not sure why, but in 2002 responded to a newspaper adverstisement from Littleton Coin. They were offering ASE bullion coins for $4.95 each with a limit of 5. Ahhh...the good ole days I didn't know anything about them at the time but I thought they would be neat to give as small gifts to friends. Since then I've expanded my interests...bullion silver eagles to proof silver eagles to proof sets to mint sets and beyond. I love the history of coins and the people that collect them.

I started collecting wheat pennies back in the 70s, I think. My grandma gave each of the grandkids a Peace dollar, which I still have. All these were circulated as my family did not have much money. I then stopped because of school activities and then picked it back up at the age of 25, but since money was tight by having to work I could not add many items. So, for about 5 years I was able to buy here and there. I stopped again because of my long and crazy work hours. This brings us to today..........now I am retired, money is still tight but I have been picking up little pieces here and there for the last 2 months or so. Seems when I had the money to spend, there were other priorities. Now, when I have all the time in the world, I don't have the money. The story of my life.

Hmmmm? => Well, I have a fairly very similar story ... => my Granny collected coins ... and occasionally, my Mum would drop me off at Granny's house when I was very young (3-4-5-ish kinda age) .... anyway, Granny would entertain me by showing me her coins => apparently I "loved" money ... Granny also collected coins, but not "that" seriously => but the few coins that she did collect, she left to me in her will (awwwhh, how awesome is that) ... => anyway, although I have been keen and then "not so keen" throughout my life, Granny is definitely the catalyst to my recent (last few years) collecting-obsession => "I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!"

1964 or thereabouts....my father collected, my grandfather collected. I started with Lincoln Cents.
My father really liked and collected Canadian coins, too.

I have "attempted" to collect coins for the last thirty years, but just recently have invested the time to learn about what I was trying to collect, so while I have coins in my collection that I have had for decades, I only admit to being a collector for about a year or so.

It was the mid- 80's for me, I was probably 5 or 6 years old. I still have the first coin--a 1942 Mercury dime--that my grandmother gave to me. That's the coin that started it all.
I also still have the very first coin I ever purchased as a kid--an 1895 Barber Half--that looks like it was washed up on the beach, and then left in a sand dune with a hundred years of erosion eating away at the precious metal.
After that mess, it was picked up by an 8-year old kid who carried it with him wherever he went and rubbed it for good luck.
Dumb kid...

I did some casual collecting as a youngster, but just got back into it less than 6 months ago.
