I have heard others talk about contacting another ebay user, as when he is bidding on a fake coin. Private auctions combat this. But how is it done? I just typed a message to another user who I think may have received my coin by mistake, but ebay blocked the message because I have no business with him. Is this new? Is there a trick to get around it? TIA

Where did you go to contact them? I've always used the button on the feedback page and it's worked.

I have tried both the link on the ebay My World page and the button on the feedback page. I enter the verification code after I type my message. Then the following is revealed: quote: My Messages: Contact Member Attention!
We have determined you are trying to contact an ebay member with whom you are not currently involved in an open transaction. For the protection of the ebay community, we sometimes block these types of communication. To prevent this occurrence from happening in the future, we recommend the following:
* If you are a seller, respond to all bidder questions before the auction ends.
* If you are trying to contact the seller of an item that has not yet ended go to the item page and click the "Ask seller a question" link.
* If you are the winning buyer of an item go to your My ebay page under the items I've Won section. Click the action drop down menu and choose the "contact seller" action.
* If you are a seller trying to contact your wining buyer, go to My ebay and under the Items I've Sold section, click the action drop down menu. Choose the "contact buyer" action.
* Reply to seller/bidder through personal email provider (if the sender has not hidden their email address).
Thank you for your understanding.

Now that is curious...you edited your post (unless I'm losing my mind) and there is no indication that you did so. Benefits of ownership, I presume.

Yes, I do leave a note when I edit other members posts though. I edited mine because you edited yours to answer my pre-edit question, before I edited, but after you edited. Whew. Know what I mean?

I agree with snooba on that one Bobby..... Definitely gave me a good laugh this morning. Two things, I have had this happen to me before, and as far as I know, it has been this way for a long time. I received the same message easily two years ago when trying to contact someone about an item that I wasn't involved with. Why do I not see the "reply with quote" button anymore?

Go the item page and select contact seller. I have never had problems there. If I try using on their feedback page I get that weird message myself.

This person is not the seller, nor does he have any items for sale.
However, I have reason to suspect that the seller mixed up the invoices and sent the other fellow my coin.

I have had this happen to me before. Like sometimes it wont let me message someone at all, and other times I can message them a few times, but after a while it will say you can't contact them regarding this item anymore. It's a pain. Ty

Why not let the seller straighten it out? Its his job to get it right the first time not if he gets it wrong the buyers straighten out the sellers mess

True. (Bryan, I love your knight) The seller has offered me a refund, but I haven't received it yet. I thought it was customary to refund through paypal if one paid through paypal, but I've experienced several different outcomes. Does paypal charge an additional fee for a refund? Even if they do, it can't be as much as a stamp (for a purchase of a few dollars). It's too bad I didn't receive the coin, though. It was corroded and damaged, but it would have filled a hole. Here is a picture of the AG 1864 BR cent that was almost mine:
