http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-STANDI...em35b880f8e8This quarter has been talked about on this forum before and I know, I know (I KNOW!) it's been cleaned, repaired and it is ugly as sin. However: 1.) There's no doubt it's a 1916 - I can see the date and NGC sees it and verifies it 2.) Arguably, it still looks better than a dateless, diagnostically determined example 3.) I don't ever see myself forking out the dough for one that has this much detail and no problems 4.) I might accidentally put a sharp stick through the 1916 hole in my SLQ album and poke out my eye - so that makes filling the hole with this quarter better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick - right? Seriously - please give me two pieces of advice: 1.) Where, exactly, have the "repairs" taken place on the coin? 2.) What would be a fair "best offer" for it? Thanks! Disclaimer: I don't collect this series at all. The seller has declined 7 offers from 4 people already so you're not likely to get much of a discount. For a problem-free F12, the price guides range from $5,450 to $7,000 so the seller is at least not lying but certainly pushing on the high end. However, a price of $4,500 is far too high in my opinion. If you have a Heritage account (highly recommended, and free), take a look at this example: http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...6&lotNo=5800PCGS VG8 CAC'd with a readable date sold for $4,312 on Jan 6th, 2012. I'd much rather wait around for one like that, or one that's cleaned in VG for ca. $2,000 if you can find it. Just my $0.02 :)

This one has been discussed in a previous thread, I would stay far away from that one. I agree with small eagle, look for a problem free VG for that price. I know your on the lookout, and since it's my favorite coin, I'll keep you posted if you find one in your range. I own a VG-8 ANACS, with about 3/4 of the date visible.

Repair: I saw the same thing: "Looks like it is just under the eagles breast." coindog
A fair "best offer": As a buyer, I would not offer anymore than I would be willing to lose at a casino. The "joy" of ownership versus the realization that I will never, ever recoup the cost.
WAIT! When the opportunity arises buy an example that you will be proud of. And one which will have a resale value.

Sigh. I guess I'll put on safety glasses before opening my SLQ album....

I saw the spot under the eagle as well which is probably related to the repair/tooling of the head- look carefully for the double facial profile. Coin repair does have its place for high end damaged coins but only in the hands of a skilled individual. Unfortunately, this repair looks like an amateur hour special which was made much worse by abrading the entire surface of both sides of the coin

Man, this 1916 SLQ looks like it was a pretty nice coin before someone decided to "work" on it!

Regardless of money spent on a coin like this, it will ALWAYS be a problem coin. Always. This is THE key date in the series. Eyes will always be cast on this slot first, then the viewer will look at you and asked what happened to this coin? Well...I paid thousands of dollars for it.... You did WHAT?

Stay away Steve ! You might be happy at first then after awhile, the flaws on this coin will eat away at you and, you will be stuck with a problem coin that will be almost be impossible to move..

with all the above Steve. A damaged coin will always be damaged ... and it will haunt you forever while you search for an upgrade. My view ... be patient and eventually the right one will come along. David

Wow, that is hideous, even for half that price I wouldn't waste the money.

For such a decimated shield the coin has a pretty good full date. Looks like a massive repair and then artificial wearing to blend it in. I'd stay away from it. CAVEAT EMPTOR big time!

I'm just gonna say it 'cause nobody else will and I know you won't care anyhow 'cause you've already made up your mind to wait so I won't be blamed for you actually pulling the trigger on this purchase; BUY IT!

It looks like all the fields have been smoothed, and isn't the right side support supposed to be a lot less detailed than that?
