The details you provided give a clue as to what happened. I suspect it's sustained a blunt force that slightly flattened the coin. Besides wear, it may have also contributed to the flatness on the bust and rims. Your 1869 is also well within specs 45.2 grains = 2.92gr; I have many IHCs with similar wear in this range. The date punch and position looks good too, and it's hard to fake the "shallow N" reverse convincingly. If one were to counterfeit this year, I would think they'd target higher grades.

Thanks DV, I really appreciate your thoughts and it does help alleviate my concerns. No way I wanted a fake in my album and now with all the help from members here, I'm sure it's the real deal.

The position of 1 in the date looks odd.

I looked at a bunch more 69's and there are 1's that look exactly like mine and in the same position.

As always I agree with vermontensium when it comes to IHC's.

Quote: The position of 1 in the date looks odd. We're all looking closely--and noticing things. The date punch used this year appears to me to correspond to this date. The spread-out look to the "1" in the date may also be due to the force that flattened out this coin.

I've seen coins put between leather and hammered on, that can produce a slightly larger coin, people do strange things to coins, and not just to improve or hid flaws in counterfeits, sometimes out of boredom alone. THis 1869 IHC looks okay to me.

I was searching on ebay and it was a tough coin for me. Now I'm looking for a 69/69 but it's proving much harder to find a good one. I wanna find one soon so I can start concentrating on that 77.
