I'm pretty new to collecting and have gotten the bug big time. I've been buying IHC off ebay and pretty much have my album filled except for the 77. I just bought a 69 recently and it just felt thinner than most of my others. I went to put it in its spot in the album and it almost wouldnt fit. I pretty much had to force it. I took it back out to compare to the 68 that was next to it and it was between 1/32 to 1/16 taller. I've been reading everything I can get my hands on to find out if its fake. I weighed the 69 at 45.2 grains. That's pretty under weight from what its supposed to be at 48 grains. It looks real and worn but I thought I would ask some of you guys since I dont know Shinola, lol. Any help would REALLY be appreciated...thanks ! Here's a pic.... Well, I'm not that good detecting fake Indian Head cents, but the date looks funny to me and the rims don't look right either, if the weight isn't right I would say it's a fake.

Thanks....it seems kinda weird that they would go to the bother to age it but maybe they can stamp them out that way.

I weighed the 68 next to it and it hit 48 exactly. Others were 1 or 2 grains under.

Difficult to tell by photos. A little off in weight could well be from wear. Odd that you weighed others and if the same wear, those should also have that weight loss too.

The 69 is one of my most worn coins by far. I tried seeing if it was attracted to a magnet but it's not. It's not a strong magnet, jut a fridge type magnet but still not too bad. I read that some of the Chinese cf's are made with some steel and should be attracted to a magnet but you have to have a strong one.

That's awesome Jeffrose....I can't see any difference at all as far as details. Everything matches really well. Maybe it's just really worn. The rims are a little big but that's about it.

I have a couple of the IHC Chinese fakes that were made by the largest Chinese seller of these. When you magnify them they are porous such as the nickel I posted here: https://goccf.com/t/88814I am not saying this is a guarantee - but this guy was the most prolific maker of these fakes and the largest seller that was on ebay before he was kicked off.

Thanks Earle, I really appreciate the help. My 69 is pretty slick, it's not porous at all. It is a little bigger around and even feels thinner than any IHC I've ever felt. Maybe it's my paranoia kicking in, lol. It bothered me for awhile that it didn't fit right in its hole. I had been reading about the Chinese flooding the market with fakes. I probably have a bunch of fake mercs.

Looks legit to me, just uneven wear. Your coin looks too original and worn for a Chinese fake. Take a sigh of relief :-) Tough date!

Thanks ! It was a tough date and I'm thinking it's just from being worn that it's a bit light.
