I was just looking at my uncirculated Lincoln Memorial album and getting ready to fill the last hole when I realized that this year or last year or the year before aren't Memorial cents. Actually 2009 through 2012 aren't Memorial cents at all. I guess technically the last Memorial was 2008. Does this mean Whitman, Dansco, Littleton and countless other coin folder and books will be making Lincoln Shield books and folders starting with 2010? Or is "Uncle" going to do away with cents all together? I will miss the Memorial but I think I will save a few of those 2008 rolls for "posterity"---John Edited by buffalojohn 02/05/2012 12:33 pm

I'll miss the Memorial reverse too, but I imagine Shield cents will be with us for years to come. Unfortunately.

Quote: I guess technically the last Memorial was 2008 So true and 2009 should have been the last year of the cent altogether

Dansco includes 8 slots for 2009 in the current version of the #7100. It's a nice book because it has the whole history going back more than a century. The first four pages are all wheat cents, with just three unlabeled slots to spare on the fourth page. The next four pages are labeled "Lincoln Memorial Cents" but the last page starts with 2007, so it doesn't work out close to evenly like the wheats.
If they keep minting cents, I hope they hold out exactly until 2021 so my album can look finished. Maybe they'll keep making them NIFC for a long period of time like they do with half dollars. If not, I hope Dansco comes out with a nicer last page that showcases the bicentennial cents and doesn't have all those empty slots.

I use Whitman Classic Albums. Have been for a real long time so many, many of the pages are blanks but have their little press on letters/numbers that Whitman sells. So now I just added more blanks and did this: They didn't have a word for plated so I just used the one that said Clad. I know what it means, so that is all I care about. I've been using so many blank pages over the years, about 1/3 of my Ablums look like that. With Whitman you can order blank covers, blank pages, sheets of those letters/numbers, make your own Albums.

Dansco makes a replacement page as well. It starts in 2008, has 12 slots for the 2009 (P,D,S), and ends with a 2016-D. The only problem is, with the way they are just randomly changing the reverse of coins, on a whim, do you wait until the page would be full before you buy it?

The shield reverse is expected to be with us for fifty years. I think the bigger concern is whether or not the cent will be here that long. While I advocate that the Mint should stop making the cent for circulation, I would love to see it continue as NIFC for collectors.

While we all know jbuck has a demented, evil, loathing of the poor little Lincoln cents, we all still love him like a brother on this forum anyway. I agree with your dilemma about the pages. I know Whitman makes some sort of "press on(?)" letters that you can make the rest of a blank page look just like the printed area. I assume Dansco does the same so it might not really matter. BTW - although I wholeheartedly disagree with Jbuck on getting rid of the cent ... But I also admit he has the more logical stand on it and is likely correct about the issue. I just happen to like them enough that I do not want to see them disappear as a part of our everyday culture. Mine is a very weak argument indeed based on nothing but 49 years of sentimentalism where I associate pennies with my grandfather - the one who got me stated in coin collecting. He always, let us kids put the pennies in the big "penny bank." He did that with us for years. I also like the looks of the shield and am hoping it inspires artists to go back to more classic looking coins. Again - weak argument and not cost effective!

If they do go NIFC they should switch to the throw-back composition too. I should say, if and only if; nobody wants the 2009 20 coin situation again.

I got the update page for my Dansco a couple months ago to put all the shiny new 2007 and 2008 and Lincoln Bicentennials and Shield cents that I had acquired into, and it looks great. Unfortunately, I'm still waiting for Intercept Shield to come out with the new Lincoln album beginning with 2008. Lemme see, it's now 2012 and they still haven't done it......

I do want it to remain NIFC to fill the holes. Quote: If they do go NIFC they should switch to the throw-back composition too. I doubt they will, but I would like to see a shield cent Dansco. I have my Lincoln Memorial cent dansco filled up and I don't really want to fill the rest of the holes with shield cents (afterall it is a Lincoln memorial album). I don't have many wheats so I don't use the Dansco 7100 lincoln album either. It seems like it would be simple to re-label a new shield cent dansco, not to mention the extra money they would make off collectors buying it.

My Dansco Lincoln Cent album is complete at 2007 (minus three key dates, of course). I have my 2008+ cents in a separate album. The 2008, 2009, and 2010 show the transition from Memorial, through Centennial, to Shield. I like it.

That is a nice short type set. Do you have some space to add some wheat cents too?

I have put all 20 different 2009 Lincoln Cents in my Albums and been able to lable them as to what they are. With the blank pages and covers and those sheets of press on letters/numbers, you can make any type of Album you want. I've made many multiple types such as a Liberty Head/Buffalo/Jefferson Nickel Album all in one binder. Naturally leaving out proofs due to way to many. Done the same with many others. Fun to make your own. And using longer posts, I could make an Album as thick as those posts are long. I'm looking for really long posts so might make a foot thick Album.
