GRADING BANKNOTES
This is by far the best & most accurate note grading guide that I have found for Australian (& maybe world-wide) banknotes:

GRADES
100 - UNCIRCULATED (UNC)
95 - ABOUT UNCIRCULATED (aUNC)
90 - EXTREMELY FINE (EF)
85 - About Extremely Fine (aEF)
80 - Good Very Fine (gVF)
75 - VERY FINE (VF)
70 - About Very Fine (aVF)
65 - Good Fine (gF)
55 - FINE (F)
45 - About Fine (aF)
40 - Good Very Good (gVG)
30 - VERY GOOD (VG)
25 - About Very Good (aVG)
20 - GOOD (G)
15 - About Good (aG)
<10 - Poor (P)

Characteristics to grade banknotes:
CLEANLINESS
20 - As printed - clean and bright
15 - Slight soiling - just noticeable
10 - Considerable soiling and/or banker's marks
0 - Very dirty, legibility is reduced

FOLDING
20 - As printed - flat and unfolded
15 - One or two folds leaving a very faint crease
10 - Several prominent folds
0 - Many folds and heavy creasing

SURFACE
20 - As printed - crisp with no damage
15 - Slight, just detectable abrasions or damage
10 - Readily detectible damage in several places
0 - Extensive damage

EDGES
20 - As printed - perfectly straight and even
15 - Slightly rough or with very minor indentations
10 - Considerable indentation and/or with tears in the margins
0 - Badly damages edges and/or tears extending into the design

PUNCTURES
20 - As printed - no holes
15 - One or two pin holes only
10 - Several pin holes or a slightly larger puncture
0 - Several larger holes

Add the total points scored in your characteristics & work out where your total GRADES.

Print out a copy & keep it handy if your always collecting notes like I do.

Would the same guide be applicable to both Oz Paper and Polymer notes?

I have a small collection of Paper, many more polymer, but I've never bothered to actually grade any of them yet.

Too busy with my coins.

Hi Nancy, this will apply to both types of notes.

As far as polymer goes, in EDGES, if you can see through the note, then you should basically consider it as tears &/or tears in the margins.

But all good as far as that goes.

Have a look at the link to one of my ebay notes at the moment for instance: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...STRK:MESE:IT
This item does end tomorrow, so get on it quick.

I take a shot so you can see the creases & beneath the normal shots (not scanned because scanning notes is making them prettier than they actually are) & I have the grading scale & what characteristics I believe the note possesses.

I just worked out that the word possesses is a little odd.
